Default 06 WRX twin scroll mid-engine TR-42 track/street car build

I have started gathering parts for my TR-42 (chassis #004) build. This is an exo-car from Matrix Motor Werks, similar to the Ariel Atom, but way, way cooler in the looks dept AND it will be powered by an all Subaru drivetrain.

The configuration is mid-engine, with the engine and transmission mounted directly behind the seats. The Subaru AWD transmission is converted to 2WD by removing the center diff and adding a locking spool and block off plate. The balance and handling of a true mid-engine car has been proven as one of the best designs for racing and this should make quite an exceptional street/autocross car.

I bought the engine from this 2006 WRX -

and a 5spd transmission from a 2002 WRX (RA geared).

There currently is not enough room to hold the 6spd STI transmission, but in this light weight vehicle, and in a 2WD setup, this 5spd should hold up just fine since there are only two wheels under traction (plus this thing will only weigh about 1300-1400 pounds).

I will be receiving a tremendous amount of help on this build from Brandon at All Pro Subaru in Alpharetta, GA. He will give input for my mods to the engine but I also welcome any additional input from this site about the engine/turbo system.

I will be using this car for 95% street use and some autocross events.

From my own searching, here is where I think I'm headed in the mod dept -

HTA68
Godspeed TMIC (already purchased)
Upgraded injectors
Walbro 255
Aftermarket Boost Controller
TGV delete
Grimspeed exhaust

The exhaust will use a 3" y-pipe from the down pipe to transition to 2ea short 3" stainless APC mufflers.

Where I live in Georgia, this 2011 titled assembled vehicle will be required to pass emissions, so I will use the factory ECU and OBD port and the factory filler neck and gas cap built into the custom front mounted fuel tank.

that is just awesome.. Very nice kit.. I've always wanted to design and build my own roadster stick by stick but I've got to save something for myself to do when I win the lottery or retire. lol I hope everything goes smooth for you with this project..

P.S. It is a must that you change that tire and rim set-up before it's all said and done.. you have no fenders to roll and wider is better.. so 17 x 9f and 17 x 10r would be sick.. and stormtroop the paint scheme except with white wheels.. Sorry my imagination is running wild..

I initially wanted bigger tires than are pictured on the prototype car (pictured above) until I realized that the car would handle like crap because there wouldn't be enough vehicle weight to build up sufficient heat in the tires for traction.

I settled for Nitto NT-555 Extreme ZR 235/45-17 front and ZR 255/40-17 rear tires and XXR 522 wheels (17 x 8; 17 x 9) waiting for when my chassis is to be delivered next year.

Here is a link to show you sorta how my color scheme will end up

getting an 06 ecu happy enough to pass obd-2 is going to be interesting/difficult

i would highly recommend getting it running in a stock-like configuration then mod it .. to cut down the number of things to debug

i am surprised about the 6 speed. the engine-axle distance is the same the only place it would be different is overall length (poke out the back?)

explain... I understand the immobilizer and chipped key make things a bit more complicated. But what does that have to do with the emissions sustems? It's my understanding that as long as he has the immobilizer that matches the key and the ecu, then all is well as long as he wires it correctly...

Correct! It's the poke out the back problem. The entire rear frame jigs would have to be re-engineered to allow for the extra length of the 6spd. It wouldn't be a good idea to have the tail of the transmission also serving as the rear bumper.

Also, because of the extremely light weight of the car, six speeds really won't be necessary. Now, that doesn't mean one more gear wouldn't be fun.

My tuner said that passing emissions would be an easy task. How he's going to do it, I don't have a clue.

I will have to pass GA emissions, which require the OBD port, a cat and the factory style gas cap. I will be including the O2 sensors and all the factory tank items into the build.

Ok, I don't have my car yet, in fact it isn't even on the build table yet as the prototype is being finalized. But, thought you might like to see some pics of the various parts.

At least splurge on a steering wheel that's nicer than that $20 Ebay special! Isotta's wheels are supposed to be better quality/dollar than Momo or Sparco - better leather and stitching.

Of course, now that I think about it, a nice leather/suede wheel might not be the best option on an open car, huh?

Wondering about the OBD requirement?
Are you required to run an OBDII or OBDI ?
If OBDI then you obviously only have to pass the sniff test and NOT the OBDII "readiness" crap which may make it a LOT easier to pass emissions.

Bingo! Gotta view the parts as though they're being installed on a motorcycle. One unplanned rain during a ride could mess up stuff real easy.

Don't you worry about splurges, I never have a problem in that dept! LOL In fact this whole car is a splurge as I have two other hi-power toys sittin in my garage. (97 Viper GTS / 68 Camaro - 540hp/5spd)

Go look up that instrument cluster - it's $400!!! Watch it run here -

No sniff test here in Georgia so it must be the OBDII. They hook up to the OBD port inside the vehicle and test the gas cap.

that looks like it will be a ton of fun. Is it a good idea to have the gas tank in front of the driver, however? That seems like a potential big accident.

I've talked to the inspector (in Marietta) that will be signing off on my car. I also have all the assembled title info and I've talked to the salvage section of DOT located in Hapeville (I believe).

But, I may also contact you for your input too. Thanks for the offer!

All mid and rear engine cars have the tank up front and for good reason. The most dangerous place would be to have the tank located near the HOT engine compartment.

There is a guy in MN or at least on the MN subaru board who also has these pics posted. Are you the same person or are you both doing subaru setups?

Either way this is sick.

That would be Erik, he is TR-42 chassis #002. Both Subaru powered; he is using a JDM 2.0 motor and I am using a USDM 2.5 motor. We both have build threads on exocars.net under Matrix Motor Werks.

Hey man, that thing is wild up close isn't it!

I'll be going back in two weeks to drop off some parts I've received.

If you can, tell me what you think of a vf36 twin scroll. There's one for sale here I was thinking about (or just stay with my HTA68 plan).
