Default My STI sound deadening project

I posted some pictures in another thread and there was a fair amount of interest so I figured I'd start a thread......

Some of you will think this is overkill, and you're wrong. I didnt pull the carpet or headliner. That might be over kill. Some will think I added too much weight. Wrong again. This isnt a race car, its a semi modest daily driver that should sound and feel like a $40,000 car. It doesn't. I knew this going in, so don't take it as a complaint, I just think that I can correct that.

We added 92 square feet of material, and it weighs roughly 65 pounds. The door skins (inside door frame) , hatch skin, fender wells, b and c pillars have also been covered. My friend who's heading up the project, and I have easily 50 hours combined getting to this point. Add another 5 hours in reassembly, cleanup, and door speaker wiring.

I don't have any real world feedback yet, but I did shoot this quick video of the difference between two doors. The slight rattling you hear on the rear door is the door handle. Every handle on the car rattles and I'd like to correct that as well as the homelink rear view mirror. Any input?

I apologize for the cell phone photos and video. More feedback to follow.

I doubt i'll ever have the time to do this on my own, but I totally agree on using it to help.
My first complaint (1st time suabru owner) was how 'rattly' the car felt brand new. I was flabergasted to hear so much rattling in a brand new 35k car. I felt like i was driving my 20yo civic when I had expected much more quieter cabin environment. So in that spirit: +1 on your project! maybe one day i'll do it

65lbs isnt that much for this. i thought that stuff was alot heavier than that. If i ever decide to tackle this i'll be using this thread as a reference. Sadly i dont know the first thing about audio setups.

Nice project.

Personally I add dynamat only on long flat metal. I work great for a fraction of the price and weight.

My exhaust use to have a big drone sound and with only one sheet, I fully insulated the trunk, and no drone.

If the metal is thick, no need for dynamat.

I don't think that putting dynamat under the carpet is overkill.

You're only going to notice a slight difference with th Dynamat...Next Luxury Liner Pro on top. Then it'll really feel like a $40,000 car.

I disagree with the slight difference. With 8 sheets for the whole car made a huge difference. Enought for a 40k car, no. I don't think it's really possible to make a impreza feel like a 40k car.

If you want a 40k car, buy one!

Are people forgetting that a new STI costs almost $40k? Wanting a $35k+ car to sound like a $40k one isn't the most ridiculous request I've ever heard.

I would pull the headliner and do that, most annoying thing is when it rains and sounds like im under a tin roof

It kind of is actually. If you want STi performance and "40k car luxury" you get an m3 or an s5 or some such and spend more like 60k. You can't have it all for 40k.

I drove the car tonight and WOW! What an incredible difference this has made. Just shutting the doors is a pleasure. Over all the car feels more solid than it did.

I'll take some video in the next few days for sure. One thing I noticed is that road noise through the floor, and wind noise (roof rack) now seems amplified due to everything else being so quiet. I guess that's next!

The window sticker for my STI was $39,somethin if memory stands correct. I'd call it a $40k car.

I finally bit the bullet too. I bought 50 sqft to do the trunk , doors, and some of the rear deck. You said the rear view mirror rattles. I was thinking about opening up the back side and filling it with something to add weight to maybe combat some of the rattling.

That is a really good idea. I'm going to spray the door clips with a shot of dip.

I paid cost for the material and have around $350 in it. The labor alone would run $750 - $1000. 40 hours or so, combined for 2 people. Also installed front component speakers and rear co-axial's with new wire throughout.

The fit and finish of the Audio Integretions sub enclosure is incredible!

Another trick if you don't want to plastidip your trim panels is to use felt tape around the edges. I did this on my old Civic and also used felt washers behind clips and screws to keep the interior panels from rattling against the metal.

Dynamatting my doors is probably still one of my favorite mods, you simply cannot beat the "thunk" when you close the door. Ordering my AI enclosure next week and im gonna use your post as a reference point when I line the hatchdoor/floor. What are your thoughts on the flimsy spare cover? I am still undecided on what to do with mine, or if it even will be a problem... maybe velcro it down and line the rim with dynamat? what are your thoughts?

also, what sub are you going with my man? Im thinking JL W3V3 Ohm 2...

I dont know about the hatch floor yet. I also have an all weather mat for back there thats going to be in the car at all times. I guess I'll wait and see if it makes any noise with the sub.

I ordered a RF Punch P3 2 ohm sub, and a RF Power 500/1 mono block. A Power series 400/4 will power Punch series components and coaxials in the doors. Nothing too fancy.
