That's pretty cool. I could just never see paying so much for an enclosure. They are very nice though.

Thats the problem with having someone else do it though... the rape... There are different levels of deadening too Ive got as much in one door as most do in their entire cars... However, some behind the speaker on the outer skin and some on the frame helps the speakers really well.. it gives them something to work against Its the coffee can analogy Talk into an empty coffee can.. now fill it 1/2 way with water and try again... |

This is exactly what I was looking for. I just installed coilovers and the road noise is substantial now. I am completely new to interior work and pulling off body panels. Is there a good FAQ on the hatch for how to remove a majority of this without damaging it? I have the factory service manual, that may be the best thing.
Would dynamat help quite down the NVH the coils just added, or is this mainly for audio work? |

I am planning to treat all the doors on my sedan. CLD tiles, closed cell foam, mass loaded vinyl, butyl rope, and thinsulate. The only thing Im worried about is how the doors and hinges will hold up over time with the extra weight. Anyone think it will be an issue? The wind grabbed my door and pulled it open, and I saw the sheet metal flex where that door stop arm connects to the chassis, didn't like to see that

Are any of you guys closing up the doorframe holes, or just sound deadening over the holes?
I plan to do sheet metal or plexi over the holes, then Dynamat over the panel with the covered holes but I haven't taken a look yet to see if it is flat enough to do this without too much trouble. |

This is great. I've always wanted to do this but never really knew how much to buy for my car. I have an 02 WRX. With my catless exhaust I love the engine note EXCEPT with highway cruising speeds. The drone can be a little much sometimes, not to mention the rattles when I hit bumps etc. How much would you recommend for a 02 wrx sedan? 50-60 sq feet? I want to do my trunk, doors, carpets, and possibly my roof. Maybe even deaden the hood and firewall. I love subies but after riding in my brothers BMW, you really can't beat that luxury car feel. If you can achieve something close to that without buying a 60k car, that be great.

That's a ridiculous amount of work. What's your audio setup? I'm thinking about replacing my stock speakers with Alpine Type Rs that are rated at 100 watts RMS per 6.5". Based on your experience with the dynamat, do you think it would help substantially? Just wondering if the time/money investment would be worth it.

i did most of my car in the frost king duct insulator. I dunno if the end result is as good as Dynamat, but my doors are quiet, and nothing in my hatch rattles and my exahust drone dissapeared. It costs like $18 for a role and 2 rolls can do a ton if not all the car. I did my doors, and hatch in 1 roll, going to do my roof this weekend with roll 2

I did something similar, although I did not cover quite as much in the hatch area. I probably spent 25 hours putting in the noise dampening material, an amp, a sub, new front components, and moving the OK Pioneer coaxials (from the CDM Sport-Tech STi) to the back doors.
I used B-Quiet Extreme instead of Dynamat - cost me just over $100 for 50 square feet. Not a rattle to be heard at maximum volume with 75W x 4 into the speakers plus 300 watts into the sub... except for the bloody door handles, I had to put some foam tape under them on the outside because the air pressure from the bass was actually pushing them out slightly, causing a clattering. The B-Quiet didn't cut down on road noise as much as I would have liked, but there was a difference. I think I need some closed-cell foam to actually do proper noise reduction though, and I don't really feel like taking my entire car apart again. I used the Audio Integrations sub box too, but I need a grille on my sub. Audio Integrations didn't have any stock of their two-bar grille kit, and I didn't like it very much anyway, so I bought a Polk grille that a local shop had kicking around and painted it black. I had to cut a notch in the rim of the grille to fit around the contour of the sub box, but I think the end results are nice and it's fairly well protected. Inspired by your light-up sub ring thing, I might just pick up an LED light of some sort and remotely wire it to the lamp that the AI box covers up. It'd be nice to have some hatch illumination back... Sub Box by slipstream3d, on Flickr |
