Default Tips for attending rally finland (or other european wrc event)?

I think some of you have attended this rally or another European rally and can probably give some advice. Imagine I have watched rally on TV and don't know squat about actually attending one. What's the best way to get around there? Befriend somebody with a car? Where to befriend such a lad (or lass )? Where can a single guy stay with people of a similar financial situation (i.e. not much $)? Thanks so much!!!!!!

Hey,
I went over to Rally Finland last year. Fantastic event, and you've never seen cars go that fast on dirt before, I promise.

The key to the event is you buy a "Rallypass" which was 50 Euros last year, probably still the same. The rallypass is required to access any spectator area or the service park. They are available at a lot of Neste gas stations and also in Jyväskylä at several places. You also get a nice "Spectator Guide" with the pass.

I had the advantage of having friends who live there (and own a camp 2 miles from a stage) but the best thing to do is to befriend somebody over there with a car (or, better yet a motorcycle!!!). Motorcycle parking is so much easier. You can get to Jyväskylä pretty easily by train or bus, just keep in mind that it's about 4 hours ride from Helsinki, so plan most of a day to get up there. Once you're there, I'm sure there are busses but having a vehicle is easiest.

As far as places to stay, I can't help you too much (again, finding a local would be best). I'm not sure what is available for hostels and such. Keep in mind that this is the biggest even to happen there in a year so I expect places fill up ahead of the event.

Oh, most everyone there speaks atleast some english, so you don't have to worry a lot about the language barrier.

Things to see:
-Superspecial (it was on Friday evening last year)
-Any stage with a yump
-Service park (bring $$, you will want to replace every t-shirt you own with shirts in the park)
-several other stages.

One mistake people make is to try to see too many stages. Pick a handful that you will be able to get to on time and go to them without being in a mad rush the whole time.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something things, I'll add to this if they come to mind.

B: You're not allowed to go without me!

I dunno about Finland but most everything that DRT said about there was true for Germany. Getting around without a car would have been pretty tricky. Maybe you can make friends with the UK Subaru guys ahead of time as there are likely to be a bunch of them at any WRC event.

I just decided to do it, BD, since I'll be in the general vicinity (i.e. same continent) anyway. I wish I could have gone with you guys last year.

Thanks for the info.
Looks like I'll be trying to hitch a ride to a few stages.
Is the middle of town a good spot to stay (here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...7361&z=12&om=1) or would it be better getting a room out of town?

I attended Rally NZ last year (I know, not Europe) but I would recommend renting a car if your funds allow it, it makes getting around so much easier and you can go where you want and see what you want.

Also make sure you get an event program with a map of the special stages and service area, this will be your lifeline. A local map of the area also helps so you can find different roads and routes to the spectator viewing points that may not neccessarily be shown on the provided map.

Personally, I thought the start of the stages was kind of a waste of time, you just hear the engines rev and jump off the start then dissappear into the woods. I would find a nice corner to watch from. But thats just my opinion.

Have fun it'll be a blast!!

the best thing about Finland is that you can sleep in a tent right next to the stage, so in the morning when you wake up, you can eat your breakfest while watching WRC cars pass by.

I have been there 3 times, so feel free to ask questions

the easy way is to rent a car, buy a rally-pass and the official magazine with maps in it, and hit the stages. we usually make a pass through the stage to find the best viewing spot, and then try to park near to it. there are a lot of official parkings/camping sites on the stages, some even with wc/showers. but if you like adventure, i suggest you try and find a nice unmarked spot to camp. I have slept between 3 pines and a rock, with the tent entrance over the rock but that was on the very top of Urria monster jump, which is the biggest jump of the whole rally

I went with Ultimate Rallyworld for Finland in '04. Great freaking time. We stayed at the university where they rented out dorm rooms... cheap!! Not to mention, the Finns hospitality and everyone at this event, are so freaking nice! Invited to quite a few locals parties, just to hang out, etc... (And although I have yet to be at a Nascar race, I would be that Rally Finland has more drinkers...)

Alister is excellent to work with. Befriending someone with a car, or renting one at the airport in Helsinki is the way to go. We actually had a RAV4... which was great for some of the rutted stages afterwards.

That's gotta be all booked by now. What about Jamsa? it looks like the perfect place for spectating saturday. I think there's still some dorm rooms available there.

Camping would be fine, but camping alone with no tent... doubtful.

Should I just show up with no place to stay and wing it? That really takes some balls. I have respect and bewilderment towards my friends who do that on a regular basis. At least they come home with great stories.

Should and could are two different things.

You probably could just go there without someplace to stay and find someplace to lay down. Heck, just find a stage and put up a tent. (Buy one at a store in Helsinki when you fly in instead of packing one)

As for getting around... you're gonna have to make friends (and take a shower or two). The city comes alive at night.
