Default Rumormill: 2015 Ford Mustang to get 2.3-liter EcoBoost

Quote:
It's that time of year again, kids. There are no auto shows on the horizon and most automakers have squirreled away all of their big announcements for later in the year in anticipation of the summer vacation season. What's an enterprising auto journo to do but rustle up some tasty vintage rumors for the web to feast upon? The crew at Motor Authority has taken to citing unnamed sources as saying that a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine is slated to find its way into the engine bay of the 2015 Ford Mustang.

This, of course, recalls the much-celebrated (but slow-selling) Mustang SVO of the '80s. It, too, rocked a 2.3-liter forced-induction engine, which makes this particular rumor sound so sweet it makes sugar taste just like salt. MA doesn't stop with the four-pot, though. The article goes on to say that an EcoBoost V6 will also show up in the pony car around the same time, and that the 5.0-liter V8 currently tucked behind the coupe's grill will also stay along for the ride.

We hate to be the Debbie Downers of the interwebs, but we don't necessarily see a turbo four sliding into the Mustang lineup anytime soon. For starters, Ford wouldn't need to bore out the block to 2.3 liters to make solid power. The EcoBoost 2.0 already spits out 247 horsepower in the Focus ST – more than enough for a bottom-rung model.

Aside from that little tidbit, MA maintains that the rumored small 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 will power the also oft-rumored next-gen Ford Ranger successor in the States, a model we believe to be deader than the current news cycle. [Source: Motor Authority]

Current engines are fine, just drop 200-300 Lbs of dead weight.

Better styling, less weight, and a real-world suspension for those who don't drag race, and the Mustang would be looking good.

The 4-cylinder EcoBoost doesn't make sense unless the car is going to weigh as little, and be as physically lithe as the Fox body SVO.

Otherwise a boosted 4 is going to be running positive pressure so often that the fuel economy advantage will probably be nullified.

The engines currently are Mustang's strong suit.

Based on the rumors, that seems to be the plan.

I owned 84 mustang SVO. I loved it. it was really light, handeled very vell ( adjustable konis) from the factory. just got tired of working on it. it had decent power too. It had the same power but even lighter than the V8 version at the time. i Love the idea. thats why i bought the car in the first place. BUT the only way this would work again was if the weight went down.. way down.

^This. They already have a good entry level engine in the V6, which makes the mustang plenty quick. It really does not make sense to have a third option that would still have to make similar power to the already in place V6 to move the car around and not be a rental car joke again. They should aim all their efforts around turbo engines in the direction of the Focus and Fusion first. I just don't see how this makes sense..........

who said the 2015 mustang was going to be on the current chassis? We have to make it thru dec 2012 first!

But seriously 4 YEARS from now? That will be midway thru another presidents term!....Alot can happen

You had better believe that they are well underway with 2015 MY Mustang Development.

That is the 50th Anniversary of the Mustang, and it will probably be introduced on April 17th, 2014, 50 years from the 1964 World's Fair introduction date.

The cars are unofficially referred to as '64 and a half', but they were all 1965 models, for a long model year until the 1966 models came out in the fall of '65.

Leave that determination to the engineers with proprietary data and expensive modeling software. I bet people thought the same thing before Hyundai completely ditched their V6 engines in the Sonata.

You are thinking like someone who has a modified EJ engine. Direct injection doesn't work like that. If they're designed to do so, the engines can run at lambda=1 (14.7:1) even under heavy boost with 87 octane fuel and relatively high compression. Only at high rpm do they have to enrich the mixture. Also, to a certain extent brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) can actually drop as brake mean effective pressure increases (BMEP). There is a "sweet spot" that the engine can take advantage of. That's why the downsizing + direct injection + turbo thing is becoming so popular.

I agree with others that the current engine lineup in the Mustang is fine, though I would love to see the 3.5L EcoBoost in that pony car. I'll admit that I would love to see the 3.5L EcoBoost in everything Ford makes, but that's getting off track.

3 engine choices for a Mustang seems a little overkill.

4 cyl has no place in a Mustang nor a V6.

V8 for nothing.

There are a couple hundred thousand Mustang owners who'd disagree with you.

I guess you are counting the Boss 302 and the GT500 motors? I guess that's technically correct. I didn't count them since both are produced in limited numbers.

hmmm... since there has been a 6 in the mustang since day one...

oh, and the current mustang v6 is a nice piece of machinery and would be faster than the V8 on technical road courses if Ford didn't govern the darn thing.

If Ford can make a 4 pot mustang, give it incredible mpg, and start it off at a lower price- They would sell like hotcake's!. They would be all over high school parking lots, and rental car fleets all over the country. I remember seeing tons of fox body 2.3L stangs

I'm not sure I'd consider the Boss 302 motor a completely different motor than the regular garden variety Coyote though. The Boss has a different intake, cams and forged rods, but other than that, it's the same motor. I can see it both ways.
