Default 96 Legacy Engine Code reader

Hello all my girlfriend has a 96 Legacy that doesn't seem to want to start every time. When it doesn't start it throws a check engine light so I went and got an OBD2 scanner for it and it doesn't look like the connection is the same. The same scanner plugs into my wrx fine so I'll be keeping it but in the meantime does anyone know of an adapter or scanner that will work on her car?

OK so long story short, the person that was "plugging it in" was not looking in the right spot. Now I guess my new question would be is there any reason the reader is only showing an E? The CEL is still on......

I would guess the "E" stands for error.

You may want to ask in the legacy forum to see if anyone else has run across this.
