Planning to change lotsa fluids, good or bad idea?
I took my stock WRX to a racetrack last week, and realized some of the stock fluids are not cutting it. My brakes got all spongy after the day was done, most likely because of the brake fluid. I burned a bunch of manual transmission fluid. So I think I will empty and refill the following:
1)Brake fluid 2)Manual Trans Fluid 3)Read diff fluid - Not sure if I should do this one? 4)Power steering fluid - Is it better to go with a higher grade? Also, are there two brake fluid containers? I noticed two yellow caps that both said brake fluid on them. Does anyone know how to check the read-diff fluid levels? Is there any other fluids you guys would recommend changing out? -Thanks

First off, how do you burn manual transmission fluid? The seals would be melting out of your transmission before you could heat the fluid to the burning point. It is not the same as an Automatic Transmission.
Changing the Brake Fluid is a sound idea, the factory fills with a DOT3 fluid. There is only 1 brake fluid reservoir, it rests atop the Brake Master Cylinder. The P/S uses ATF, it's pointless to try to upgrade the P/S fluid unless you can quantify the results. To check the Rear Diff. fluid level, remove the upper plug on the rear diff. cover. With the vehicle sitting level, the fluid should be at the bottom of this hole when cold. Just like the Manual Trans. fluid, there is no need to replace this fluid except for mileage. |
