Default Discount Tire

Just went into Discount Tire to buy two new rear tires for the 11 STI. After doing my research I was going to run some rear 265/35 on my stock 18s. The moment I told the guy what I wanted he told me I couldn't run 265s on the subie because its AWD. He goes into a long explanation that with having larger rears I'm going to **** up my synchros and transfer case. He then proceeds to tell me I need to buy all 4 tires at the stock 245. From what I've read on here and other forums it doesn't appear anyone else has had any issues with this setup. What's everyone's opinion ? If this guy was correct then whys the GTR running a staggered setup just fine?
Frustrated !

This should be in the tires/wheel forum. You can read there about why or why-not to run a staggered set-up.

And as for DCT, it is up to them whether or not to sell/mount tires.

Additionally, you might want to check the wheel width recommendation for any given manufacturer. For instance, the Toyo R888 at that size has the minimum wheel width listed as 9.0" but to each their own.

Get all 4 the same size. If you use a tire size calculator like this: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html you'll find out how big a difference there is in the diameter and the circumference. The owner's manual states how much of a difference you're allowed, I think its something like 3/32 in the diameter.

I know next to nothing about AWD systems, but GTRs don't run the same setup as Subarus.

I wouldn't run a staggered setup on a symmetrical AWD system personally. The type of AWD system the GT-R runs is much different than ours.

That said, if you want more meat then just bump up the size all the way around. I just put 255 Michelin Pilot Super Sports on my 2009 STi and am super happy with the overall fitment. I'm on stock struts/lowering springs.

you can run 265`s all around. you will need a rear roll.

as well as some bolt on spacers so you wont rub on the inside with the stock wheels. the 20mm work well

Thanks guys. I'll just go up to a 255 all around for a little more meat

Lots of debate on the performance benefit of 255 vs 245. I'd do some research on that and still use the wheel calculator.

If its for looks then 255 does look better, unless you find a tire that tends to run a little wider than advertised in a 245.

I dunno if I'd do a 265 on a 8.5" wheel.

I'd find a wider fitting 245.

The Goodyear Eagle GT is a "wide" tire but it depends on what you are trying to get out of your tires.

As I posted above, the 255 Michelin Pilot Super Sport was an absolute perfect fit on my 2009 STi. To be specific; 255/40-18.

I went with the Michelin Pilot's 255/40-18 that NwRider suggested. Had them put on this morning and they fit well and look nice. Unfortunately I had to make the decision ASAP as it was discovered when I did my oil change that I have an alignment issue. My front's were worn down to the threads on the very inside of the tire I appreciate all the input on this!

You won't regret the choice! I love the tires so far and have yet to break them all the way loose aside from when it was wet, with traction control off

Thanks again. That size actually fits perfectly with my 1 1/2 inch drop. No rubbing and fills the wheel well great.
