This is Volkswagen's business model. It seems to be working well for them.

And precisely why my last VW was a 97 Jetta Trek. I knew to jum ship that far back.
As far as I ever knew before this purchase, Subaru's were rugged and lasted forever. And no one I ever came across with a Subaru had too much maintenance or worries. I really didnt have to buy a NEW car, but all the reviews, and CR and others, made me think this was THE car for me. I love the car other than the oil BS and the seats. Some of the rattkes have even went away. But the gremlins are piling up with this thing. I ha this preconceived idea that Subaru was a company that stood behind its products. But me and other buyers have been left in the cold so to speak. No answers. No updates. No indication that FHI or SOA are doing anything about it. On another note. Its my birthday. I washed waxed and detailed it. cleaned the oil residue off the rear, topped off my oil. Car still looks fairly new for being over a year old now. Gonna need some touchup paint. theres a huge flake missing under the fender lip. surface rust will ensue. |

When I was married we bought an '02 GTI and the tranny went out at 2k miles. VW was pretty awesome about fixing it fast though. I lost faith big time and would never buy a bew vw.
My girlfriend and I are in the market for a late 70's VW popup camper and a Volvo 240 wagon. Theyre ugly but the swedish bricks are solid. If I had it all to do over I'd buy a really clean nice 240 and still have a load of dough to buy a Westy. |

I spoke to my friend regarding oil consumption issues. He said that they have been doing many Forester FB short blocks and a couple of Impreza as well. SOA is fixing motors as they are being diagnosed , so not to worry they will fix engines that are excessively consuming oil.

Unfortunately, those of us who are just below the quart per 1200 mile allowance, are probably still SOL. |

Yea, I never quite understood the need to follow this thread if you were going to bash 79. I understand following it just out of curiosity like myself, but I've been on his side the entire time and I have the 2007 2.5i engine. I only followed it because in case we trade it in I wanna know what NOT to do.
As far as Zeeper ignoring him...why not just avoid this thread? Then...not only avoid...he had to tell him he was going to ignore him...strange. |

ST Eye, which part of the engine does your friend say is at fault for the consumption?
Has Subaru revised the FB20 or FB25 to fix this problem, and if so, when? If Subaru fits tighter rings, they should definitely redo fuel economy tests. Last edited by Commander Keen; 01-13-2013 at 08:56 PM. |

I wish ST's friend would post.
And thanks alpha, for the kind words and support. You too John and Jrobb. Had a kickass bday this weekend! And my best friend made me the coolest present ever. A nice silber decal of a popular cartoon character pouring a can of gas on the subaru logo. Its going on the rear window!!! Oh and a "Real men play Mandolin" graphic. lol time to customize!! |

79,
I have been following this thread since mid summer when my Wife's 2012 Impreza's low oil level light started coming on. Fast forward to today, she was called a couple hours ago from our Dealer that SOA is going to replace the short block. FWIW, this 2012 Impreza has ~22,000 miles on it. We started a consumption test with the dealer back in Oct/Nov at an oil change.
The dealer contacted SOA 1/7/13 and today we were told that they would be replacing the short block. So, we are waiting for the short block, Dealer said it would be a couple weeks. But for now, we'll change the oil and filter and wait. I'll post back after we get the engine changed. |

That's great news, weasle! I'm sure it has been a big hassle and a huge inconvenience, but at least something is getting done about your oil consumption problem.
Hopefully we'll start seeing more and more cases of people getting their short blocks replaced. I'm sure Subaru is trying to keep all this as quiet as possible, but hopefully the media will catch on soon the more people complain and get their engines fixed. Maybe then Subaru will change it's tune and be more willing to help those affected with oil burning turds. |

Weasle, why bother changing the oil/filter on an engine that will be replaced in a couple of weeks. Why bother?
Otherwise, congrats on the good news. |

Has the design been changed, or are they replacing short blocks with the same kind?

Big hassle, no. Inconvenience, yes. Being it is my Wife's car and not mine. Our Dealer has been very helpful so far. The Service Manager at our Dealer was very helpful, especially after it used a full quart in 650 miles / 1 week. He told my wife that was unacceptable in his opinion, however it was ultimately SOA's call. Where it's going and why, I don't know. Personally I think the oil control rings either aren't seated or are too low tension and the cold weather we had in late December exaggerated the situation. The dealer did a compression test on it 1/7/13 and it passed. A compression test doesn't indicate the health of the oil control rings, just the compression rings ability to seal the piston to cylinder wall. My Wife and I have been discussing what to do and had decided that, after using a quart in 650 miles, it was going to be a short block or a new WRX Premium. I'm still tempted to trade my 12 Outback on a new WRX. :-) |

Just a guess, but only part of the engine is being replaced, but the whole engine requires clean and filtered oil to operate correctly and to prevent wear.

It will be over due by an easy 1,000 miles in a couple weeks. Wife drives about 28,000 mile / year. |

Understood. I would hope that changing the oil would be part of the short block replacement procedure. If it wasn't, then I'd change the oil AFTER the short block was replaced, not before.

I would change it after also, and probably 1,000 miles in.

For those with cars that are burning a lot of oil, I would suggest putting up a bit of stink over the possible condition of the front catalytic converter.
All of that oil being burned and/or dumped into the front cat. is not good for it, and could severely shorten the life of the converter. I know the emissions warranty is 5yr/50K, but I'd expect the system to last well beyond that under normal circumstances. You don't need the converter failing at 50,001 miles. I'm assuming that the oil isn't making it to the second converter, but... |
