Question What to do...tires

I have a Saabaru with the factory 17s. They are getting pretty worn and are giving off some awful road noise as they wear. I have winter tires that the car will be going on soon. I plan on buying new for next spring.

However, I plan on going on a roadtrip to Chicago first weekend of November. Should I replace the tires now with new cheaper tires, run what I have into the ground, or put the snows on for the trip.

Also, if I get new now, any reccomendations? Summer only is preferable since I have snows.

Thanks,
Andrew

I would buy Hankook RS2's and drive on them. Full tread, as long as you don't hit anything serious, you will be fine.

You can take the same risk with the RE-92's, but at least with the RS2's if it warms up they will be fun.

I like the RS2s but i just got them put on about 5K miles ago and the tread is almost already gone.... I wouldnt buy them again. I heard that the ES100s were pretty good tho. I would look into those as i will be doing.

are the winter tires brand new? id just run the winter tires and not be overly agressive....your not driving cross country so i see no reason to hesitate about the snow tires...if need be and u wear the snows down before the end of winter buy a good set of all seasons that will get you through the end of winter and summer...

Are the existing tires safe? No cords, at or near the wear bars? No bubbles? If they look OK, use them, and be aware that they may not do so well with standing water. Then you have all winter to think about (or ignore) your upcoming purchase.

How is this possible? I have half a dozen auto crosses and over 20k miles on my RS2s and there is still about 25% tread remaining until I hit the wear bars.

If your all-seasons are safe use them and suffer. Otherwise mount your snows and use up some of their good life(downfall of winter tires). However it did just snow significantly just outside Chicago I believe last night.

Chicago? November?

Throw on the snows before the trip and be safe. Note that contrary to popular belief, snow tires do not disintegrate in 5k miles of dry driving. My Yukon XL tow vehicle has only one set of tires.....snows. 10k miles on them and they're all still at 12/32 inch.

I'd have to agree ... I have a set on my car now, and with them about half worn they sound like a damn truck tire ... Still, they are better then the RE92's ...

My RS2's have less time on them, but they look new.

See this is just it, I'm not wanting to push myself to buy tires for a month that I may not want.

The tread is down to the wear bars. The tires are the bridgestone RE011s. Once the slits in the treadblocks wore, they got loud as heck.

I may run the snows. I'll check the weather as we get closer and decide then.
