I dont know if anyone has mentioned this but instead of getting your power from the HU you can move your 12v socket (or keep it where it is for a stock stealth look) and use a usb adaptor to power your ipad from that then run an audio splitter from the jack and use that to tap your headunits amp and install your own volume dial. that way you should never have to use your HU and you can hide it wherever you want in the car, hell put it in the engine bay

Innovative thinking though! I wish there were a way to stream video to the iPad/Tablet from a video source i.e. DVD player. Any ideas there, short of an in-car PC? |

A) GPS in cities B) YouTube C) you can sync music or media wherever you are D) Skype calls while driving (depending of wether it's legal to do so, though I shouldn't see any problems) E) if you are willing to leave your PC on I believe you could still stream over the 3G Apart from that though I have no idea, also look for an iPad with a blown battery or busted camera because you won't be using the camera and your iPad doesnt need a good battery because it can be plugged into the 12v and it will turn on whenever your car does! |

So, it's been a while since I posted any stuff here. For my first autocross event I wanted to see how I could utilize my iPad mini in my WRX. I came across a few apps for iOS that were meant for the track and autocross, but the one that everyone seemed to use and suck out for me was Harry's Lap Timer.
http://www.gps-laptimer.de/ Features I like about that app are: ***8226; Automatically starts and stops lap timing using triggers ***8226; Video overlay of information ***8226; Multi cam Support with other iOS devices and experimental support for GoPro ***8226; OBD II integration and support for external GPS unit And I got the "Grand Prix Edition" for $27.99 to get all the features I wanted. How I used the app on the track: There is an "AutoX" option where you can set the start and finish points. So, when I walked the tracked, I set the start and finish points roughly where the official timer triggers were. And those triggers start and stop the recording of the video and lap time. But, it didn't work 100% because I think the built in GPS was a bit wonky so it wouldn't give the exact location I was, but 100ft off. Built-in GPS Couple things that can help with that. If your start and end points are very close to each other, you can set a direction in which it will trigger. You can also define how "wide" or "narrow" the app looks for those points. Messing around with those settings helped, but I still wasn't satisfied because of the GPS's built into the iPad mini with LTE and the iPhone 5. They are good enough for day to day navigation but not so much for the track. The refresh rate for the built in GPS is 1hz and that slow blip doesn't give accurate results with plotting the track, or fining the trigger points. The app does some interpolation and does a good job for what it has to work with. So for my second autocross I got an external GPS that is compatible with iOS devices. The one I got that just just came out and is a bit overkill for my application is the Dual XGPS160. You could could also just get the dual xgps150. The reason I got the newer version is that it's refresh rate is 10hz, while the xgps150 is 5hz. The device connects via bluetooth and can have up to 5 connections if you wanted. It comes with a non-slip pad and stuck the unit on my dash in the recess were my clock is. It was a night and day difference with accuracy and plotting the map! At lest it was for me lol. External GPS As for OBD device I used the PLX Kiwi 2 Wifi. It works great, and also have DashCommand app to view more vehicle information. I was having issues with the connection and the end of the day, but I think that's because my iPad and iPhone where looking for the same wifi connection. Turned off my iPhones WiFi for my second autocross and it seemed to help fix that issue. The one thing the app didn't collect data on was my braking, which I wish it did as it can help me at getting better at this whole racing thing. My set up: I was using my iPad in my dash for the main device, then my iPhone on a RAM mount as the multi cam. The iPhone was synced via bluetooth and controlled by the main Harry's Lap Timer. When it's done recording the iPhone sends the video to iCloud then to the main device so you can over lay the footage. It takes a while for everything to transfer, but they are working on a direct wifi connection in a future release to help with that. You can also switch which video is the main one, or the PIP, which was nice as my iPad can't see out the window lol. External GPS unit was the dual xgps160 and was connected via bluetooth. Data from the car was being sent from the cars OBD II port by a PLX Kiwi 2 Wifi. http://i.imgur.com/LkkYmOGl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/3sxACitl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/XbpOCoCl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/isYqLkHl.jpg |

Subscribed! I am looking and considering an iPad mini integration as well. I want it to slide in (like the show's video), and I will mount my single DIN in my glove box. All I need is the money... and someone that knows how to work with fiberglass! Definitely going to use this thread as reference.

Wow, win is right. I have some windshield suction mounts I've used with a Flip but I'm definitely going to have to look into some of the iPhone options.

hey guys I've been doing quite a bit of research on this topic lately, I think the idea is great but I noticed that everything I've been seeing from people installing the tablets are that they're all in 08+ subies. I have an 02 and the problem for me is that the way the dash is set up the AC vents are above the radio and I'm trying to have an iPad mini that is removable but have the setup look clean and as near to stock as you can by putting a iPad into a bugeye. I'd also not like to fiberglass anything if possible, but if there is no other option I probably can.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how i could still have access to the Hvac controls as well as not have the AC vents blocked by the top of the iPad? my plan is to replace my double din from a 06 and buy a single din with the aux and usb front ports to power and run audio to the system. (could anyone tell me if this way of powering does/doesn't work too?) Sorry for the bad quality but I made a mock up of the kind of thing I'm going for. thanks! |

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2098577 But, it you want the iPad mini, it's looking like you'll have to do what I did, and cover up part of your vents and relocate the hazard switch. And I'd highly recomend getting a iPad mini tray from Soundman for a very good starting point. http://www.soundmanca.com/ |

Hey guys, Wanted to give a little update. I just had to re-glue the lighting connector as it came loose, but everything has been working out great so far!
Also, I did a review/overview of Harry's Lap Timer and my experiences with it. It's a great app for when you're at the track! |

[quote=naked_dave1;40936426]I know there is a pre made regular iPad mount for 05-07, not sure if that would be helpful for you.

And I'd highly recomend getting a iPad mini tray from Soundman for a very good starting point. Thanks for the help. I think the way the vents are set up in the 02-03 compared to the 04-05 is different, they're a separate piece with the cup holder in between the radio and the vents. I think I've found a way to work it out, just trying to figure out if I can possibly keep the cup holder somehow. But more importantly, with your set up are you powering the iPad through the car or are you just using the USB front port on your single-din to power it? If it's through the car do you know if the front USB is enough to charge the iPad? |

I have mine charging though the car with a usb charger with a higher amperage, 5V/3A. As for charging though the radio, it depends on what it outputs for power for the usb. My radios usb is 5V/1A and will charge it, just a little slower.

What about Phone integration? did you ever figure out how to hook that up? I know you were talking about plugging the Ipad directly into the deck for power and music but from what I'm seeing you just directly plugged into a 12V source. That being said I am going to assume that you are running the Ipad via Bluetooth which would make is so you cant connect a phone to the radio. Just wondering what you came up with.
