EJ25D re-clocked ECU - 10% higher rev limiter. $50 SHIPPED
SOLD!!!
I posted this in the main Engine/Power/Exhaust forum, but I then I realized the overwhelming majority of potential users of this ECU would be BD/BG Legacy/Outback owners. So, here I am, cross-posting. I have a spare EJ25D ECU that I had re-clocked a couple of years ago to raise the rev limiter by 10%. Thus the limiter should be at about 7150rpm. I've never actually confirmed that, I just know the engine will rev to at least 7000rpm based on taking it to 7k on the dyno. As I recall it cost me $100 to get the ECU re-clocked. So let's say $50 shipped. Pat Olsen

Stupid question:
Would an ECU from a 1998 2.5 Impreza RS (the only year the Phase I EJ25 was available in the RS in the US) also work ? I am not really interested in this, just curious. |

ECU is spoken for by JRsleeper.

Dyno graph showing (nearly) 7000rpm pull. It's an EJ25D, so yes, AFAIK. |

I read through the overclocking thread a while back, and it seemed as though people were having troubles with all the other ECU functions when overclocked. Is that the case for this ECU, or is the only thing changed about it the rev limiter?

I sold and shipped the ECU today, just updated the original post.
As for issues with it, I didn't notice any. I wish I had some way to datalog timing with it, as it would've been interesting to see if the timing curves were also "re-clocked" along with the rev limiter. On the dyno it didn't seem that the power/torque curves were shifted (as a result of the timing curves being shifted), but that's not exactly definitive proof. Pat |

The rev limit changes as does the base idle speed. I overclocked my own ECU in an effort to get a better/smoother idle with aftermarket cams. As Pat said, it's not widely known what else changes.
I have a pretty good feeling that things like knock/misfire detection are "altered" a little bit... Based on the ECU seeing X number of 'noise' incidents in Y number of clock cycles. If the clock cycle is faster but the engine isn't running faster, then this will basically make the ECU slightly less sensitive to misfire incidents, or in my case, false misfire detections due to lw flywheel and cams combination. I also believe that the IAM (ignition advance multiplier) will lean towards the advance side and will also get there more quickly from an ECU reset. However, I've got no way to prove my theories, so don't take them as gospel =] |
