No offense to you if you're excited about the race and all... but just a note....

PLEASE LORD, NO MORE STREET CIRCUITS! I BEG YOU!!!!

Race at VIR! Race at Laguna Seca. Race at Road America, or Road Atlanta, or Miller Motorsports, Thunderbolt, or Mosport! JUST PLEASE STOP TRYING TO TURN CITY STREETS INTO AN INTERESTING RACE!!!!!!

*sigh* I hate street circuits even more than I hate Tilke tracks

Anyone who spent 12 million on an IRL race with no guarantees has reduced mental capacity.

Street circuits are horrible spectator events. There's usually very little passing because the streets are so narrow and lined with concrete barriers that keeps anyone from pushing their luck. If you've never been to a race before, go to the Grand-Am race at NJMP. Grand-Am usually provides some great racing, and there will no doubt be a few support series races that weekend, too. I'd almost guarantee you'll get a better show than you will from a street IRL race.

The racing doesn't matter and if you've ever been to the Long Beach Grand Prix you'll understand. It's all about bringing in revenue to the surrounding restaurants, bars, and businesses. I love the LBGP as you can drink, relax, check out so many different areas of the track and since you're typically elevated you can see a lot. Places like VIR aren't great for huge amounts of spectators. Also city events can support lots of visitors with restaurants and accommodations.

If he has 12 million dollars to invest he clearly has more common sense than most of us. LOL!

But to me, the racing DOES matter. Granted, this weekend I was at the Mitty, which is an amateur event where the results don't matter and the racing isn't that close. It's more of just a "car porn" event, looking at the old Lolas, Chevrons, Corvettes, Lotuses, etc.

I understand the reasoning behind holding events in places like Long Beach, St. Pete, and this coming race in Baltimore. It just saddens me as a racing fan to see racing suffer in the name of the mighty dollar. Long Beach may be a fun party environment with tons of restaurants, accommodations, and the ability to support huge amounts of spectators..... but let's be honest.... the racing sucks.

Montreal has the right sort of idea. Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a good track, and it's right in the heart of the city.... so you get proper racing and all those spectator bonuses that come with being in a population center. If more races were like that, I'd be all for it.... but I'm getting sick of concrete canyons with poor racing, no passing zones, and racers having to back off because there's no room for error with walls so close.

Edit: Oh, and the Long Beach ALMS race is under 2 hours.... don't ever count on me traveling that far to watch a race that short. It took me until last year to finally drive the 3 hours to Atlanta for a 10 hour race!

I totally understand where you're coming from but lets face it you always get a better show by watching the racing on tv. Spectating in person really limits the drama and build up of a pass.

You're right though it's hard for a race car driver to race hard when the asphalt is rough and a slight mistake puts you into a barrier unlike most dedicated race tracks.

I've raced some events where we share the weekend with Grand Am at VIR and I'll be honest it's pretty boring to watch live after an hour but I guess just about anything is after you been going 170 mph racing your own car . The most exciting parts is being in the pits and watching the pros go to work on wrecked cars etc. Being there to see the cars, the smells, and literally feeling everything racing has to offer is great and then watching the race taped afterwards gives you the best of everything.

Agreed, and I'm still debating whether or not I'm going to Petit Le Mans this year. On one hand, it's the season finale... my Frenchies are gonna be back to defend from their lucky rain-shortened win last year... and it was VERY fun last year. On the other hand, you can see a lot more on TV than you can sitting down in 10A/B, even with the big jumbotron up on the hill at the bridge.

Yeah.... the paddock access was what really made Petit Le Mans so amazing. I remember Stu's face the first time we saw Olivier Panis just strolling around.... and my shock when I turned around to see Ron Fellowes over my shoulder looking at the new Jaguar. Watching the Acura boys rebuild the car from a bare monocoque after Scott Sharp had binned it on Thursday was absolutely astounding, too. And yes, TV can't convey the smells of fuel in the pits nor the intestine-shaking roar of the Corvettes climbing the hill out of turn 1 at full throttle.

Why are you sitting at turn 10, you dolt? Sit at the Top of the esses, the screen is bigger.

Because we knew turn 10 would be where the action was... and we were not disappointed. After it started raining, it turned into a skating rink and Audi parking lot This weekend at the Mitty, during the Playboy MX-5 Cup race, there was a LOT of action right there in turn 10. A few nice passes, a few passes backed out of at the last second, and some love taps going up the hill to cap it off

I went to the ALMS race in DC a few years ago. There wasn't really any good place to watch from and see more than one corner.

It's hard to beat what the TV camera can show you for street/road racing. Nevertheless, if this event happens, I'd certainly consider going. Unlike the DC race, there are tons of bars & restaurants within walking distance of this.

If anyone has more interest in this, I may be checking it out. It does sorta suck since the amount of buildings may prevent a good view... but still. Its in my backyard so we'll see about ticket pricing.

You don't go to a race to see the race, you go to a race to hear the cars, see the one turn you're lucky enough to sit in and enjoy the atmosphere.

^ What he said. After the first hour of watching the same corner and cars go by just doing that could get monotonous, me and a bunch of friends are planning on enjoying the atmosphere in one/many of the bars around the area.

We'll most likely be attempting to ride the train into town that day. With both Indy and ALMS that one weekend in the city it should be packed, but at the same time amazing if it's pulled off right. Here's our MAIC thread for it.

This will beat watching the gang kids racing their dirt bikes down the road in DT Baltimore.

I'm in for it, I agree that great observation points will be difficult. Having this on something like Canton area or Fed hill would've given it a nice back drop instead of the convention center (FTL)
