oil change ? jack or flat
when i go to take out the drain plug and fliter, i will have to jack the car up to get under there, but should i put it back down while the oil is draining?
also, in the subymods how-to, they said to take of the oil filter first, let the oil drain and then do the drain plug. would it be a problem if i did the drain plug first and then the filter? it seems doing the filter first would make much more of a mess. |

I drive up on rhino ramps, take out the drain plug first, wait, than take the oil filter off. Been doing that way for 7 years, and almost 50 oil changes.

I run my car up on some 2x6 pieces and it is high enough to get under
my driveway also has a slight slope to it so i park with the nose downhill and it is just fine |

It really doesn't matter. I recommend doing whatever works out easier for you.

I jack up the car to get the plug off, then lower the car after a while to increase the flow. If the flow doesn't change i just leave it up.

I'm able to get under there with a pan without taking the car off the ground. I love it. Easy oil changes ftw!

Just make sure that if you don't use ramps and use a jack that you use jack stands also. Just had a friend lose his son last week when the jack he used gave way and crushed him. He just got under it quick to check his oil filter to see if it was lose. RP

Thats horrible, sorry to hear that.
If you are not sure if your car is supported well enough, then it isn't. Jack stands are the best assurance you can have (on a solid surface). I've used ramps for years and have never had a doubt about their safety tho. On the '02 wrx, the pan plug is towards the rear, so raising the front IMHO is better. In reality, flat or front raised, not much of a difference. |

I can reach the drain plug just fine without ramps, but I have monkey arms. The filter, on the other hand, is in the absolute worst possible place, and getting to it without ramps (or jacking it) is a gigantic pain.
Just leave the car up while it drains, don't bother moving it until you're done. Check the level when it's flat, not on the ramps, of course. |

Check your service manual when in doubt.
If you want to do one wheel at a time the jack points are just behind the front wheels and just infront of the rear wheels. You can also use the rear diff if you want to raise the back of the car, or the front cross member if you want to jack up the front. ALWAYS USE JACKSTANDS scroll down through this thread to see a good diagram of the jackpoints for your scooby: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ght=jack+point |

thanks, i know about the jackpoints next to the wheels, but i was thankinging that it would be better to jack it up somewhere in the middle and a front cross member would be perfect for that. yes i always use jackstands.

I left the undertray off and can change my oil/filter with the car on the ground, no problems.

i go up some 2"x6", then i jack it up, place ramps underneath, move the jack to the drivers side and have it up as back up...then i remove the splash guard and do the oil change.
be safe |
