Default 00 RS gauge Cluster in a 94 L

I am getting a 1.8L to 2.5rs swap done on my car soon and i was just wondering if the 2000 RS gauge cluster will fit into my 1994 L. Or can my94 gauge pod be modified so it will fit. Any info will help.

thanks
Aaron

The '00 RS had a digital odometer, while your '94 would be mechanical, correct? I'm no expert, but I suspect you'll have to keept the '94 cluster and dash wiring harness. I know from experience that 97+ Imprezas have different dash harnesses and AC systems than '93-96 Imprezas had, so the swap may be easiest if you figure out how to stick with the '94 set-up.

i will still have to use my old one if i have the complete wiring harness and ECU from the EJ25 engine? Does anyone know if the 00 RS gauge cluster will fit physically into my94L?

Imprezas have 3 main harnesses, the engine harness, the dash harness, and the interior harness. Again, I'm no expert, but usually with a swap, you only change out the engine harness. If you change out the dash harness, you may need to also change out your '94 dash to a '97+ dash, and then your doors might not close like one friend of mine who did this with a '95 L that got a Ver 6 swap that included the dash. So then he had to source Ver 6 door moldings to make it all fit. It turned into a massive headache for him. Another guy I know did a '94 WRX motor swap into his '97 Impreza, and his dash was considerably different from the '94, yet that '94 motor had previously been in a '93-96 style US Impreza.

So just be prepared for headaches. The less things you change over, the better.

Oh, and yes, the cluster will fit physically, so if you're not afraid of wiring, you can probably make it work.

You can make it work if you have enough of the wiring harness from the RS. But also depends on whether your swap involves the new RS tranny also since the newer instrument cluster reads its speed from a speed sensor mounted on the trannys. Your '94 is currently cable speedo operated and not electronic.

The engine also comes with the 2000 tranny and rear diff.

I've seen where someone had put a 02 wrx gauge cluster in an L. I remember seeing that things needed modifying in order to fit.

I'm considering going this route, but I'm not sure. I'm getting a wrx tranny so I need some way to monitor the r'spm.

I had a thread on this a little while back about the compatibilities of the speed sensors between model years.

As for fitting in the new gauge cluster, Eby put a WRX cluster in his L. He said that he needed to create a custom mount for it and had to do some bondo work to get it to look right. I do not know if the RS gauge cluster would fit any better than the WRX one. I can't remember what the RS cluster looks like compared to my L's cluster.
