I'm curious about how this tune impacts your warranty. Say you take it to a different dealer (because they open one up closer to your house or something)
How do those techs know this is an official Subaru tune vs. an opensource one? Are you just relying on your paperwork? Did you get back paperwork on what was done? It all seems like a lot of mystery here. I'm not sure how all of the Subaru dealer computer systems are connected but I've never really been impressed with any car dealers information network that I've seen. Subaru does seem to have a better setup than Nissan, for example (based off recent experience with both) As long as the dealer that did the work is still in business I'm sure you'll be fine as they are likely keep those records on site. However, if they were to fold or get bought/converted to another brand you might be left hung out to dry. Are you concerned about this at all or are you thinking about just selling the car at this point while it is running properly?

This is why you should by the cobb ap2. Then if you are worried about the dealer, you click a few buttons and the factory tune goes back on the car and nobody can tell. When you pick up the car, click a few more buttons and your stg1 tune goes back on the car.

Congrats on getting the car running. I would say beat the snot out of it until the day the powertrain warranty runs out, then dump it.
Did you ever ask Subaru corporate for an extended warranty for your trouble? Many of the people that dealt with the '09 bearing issue received the 100k extended warranty. |

Not to add to a debate that's been raging since the dawn of the AP, but my Subie tech and service manager said that the only way Subie could tell that the tune was changed if you unmarried the AP was if the ECU gets sent back to Japan... They said that they have no way of knowing in-house... They said that usually its the other mods that gives them heads up... And since I'm completely stock other than the AP, I figured I could swing it... It was why I bought the AP after talking to them.... So much differing information out there.... Really grinds my gears.

Under normal circumstances I would use a cobb tune. I don't think they are ever going to look further than what map is on board the day its at the dealer. But the way my luck has been so far. No thanks

From the information I have gathered these are the most commonly reported engine features about the next WRX and STI. They will have a 2.0 direct injected turbo. This bright idea will be based off the new " FB" engine platform. This combined with a also rumored weight reduction will create the line up most of us will probably be opening blown motor threads about in the years to the come.

Subaru has some quality issues, what automotive manufacturer doesn't. What I wonder is how many of these, "my suby blew up and soa won't give me a new motor", stories have been from poorly chosen mods or mods gone wrong. Face it, the sti, as the evo, are probably the most sought after tuner cars out there. Generally speaking they get modded shortly after leaving the dealer's lot.
Besides they're not many cars out there you can almost double the hp with a stock block and drivetrain and expect it to stay together any length of time. |

Glad you got your 40k fix. I would be pissed after they gave me that enterprise rent a crap. How is it doing now? Wonder if anyone on this forum is a share holder of the FHI? |

Its too early to tell. I am going through a break in procedure per the techs instructions, which are unlike any other break in I have performed. Gradually bringing the car up to 6k RPM as often as I can really sucks the gas. Overall I have noticed a nice improvement in just how much better the car feels. Keep in mind my last motor was dikked up from day one. So this " improved" feeling may not have anything to do with the tune. Sport sharp is much more impressive than before. The car would pull timing often making Sport Sharp a joke. I will report back with the full report after the break in peroid.

Out of curiousity, what were the exact break-in specs according to the tech?

"Conventional oil for the first 1000 miles. , bring every gear gradually through the RPM range and as close to 6,000 RPM as often as possible, no constant low engine speed, no abrupt WOT, DO NOT lugg the motor. Install Shell Rotella 5w40 , after break in period. Never use Royal Purple ".... I don't want to start yet another oil debate. But using a diesel engine oil in a gasoline engine, not interested. But I will be using 5w40 from someone intended for a gas engine. I really wanted to use RP, but he pointed out a additive in RP has been known to accumulate over time and actually clog the oil sump screen. ? First I heard of it. But all this boy racer engine oil BS is really getting old. I will just use a appropriate API grade and viscosity.

FWIW I've used Rotella T6 in my 05 STi for 7 years/70,000 miles. I just traded the STi on on the '12 Wrx and will be using T6 in that as well. I also use it in my '07 ZX6r. Read up on it. It is a fantastic oil. Good luck with the new engine! |
