1st oil change - 1K or 3K
Most people here seem to do it at 1K miles. My manual says 3K. What difference does it make, if any?

Enthusiasts usually go for the short drain 1000 km (600 miles) on break-in because they like to worry a lot and don't trust the very skilled engineers and penny pinching warranty bean counters that deisgned, built, tested and sold the car. So 3,000 miles is probably fine but changing it at 1,000 miles probably won't hurt a thing. Some companies (Triumph motorcycles and maybe Jaguar I think) do get fussy about the first oil replacement not being done too soon with a full synthetic because they want the piston rings to be fully bedded before dropping their special mojo break-in oil. If it's still clean looking at 1,000 miles you're probably just wasting oil.

So far as I know, Subarus do not contain any special break-in oil. So, apart from the cost of the oil and filter, what possible downside could there be from changing at 1000 miles and then again at 3,000? If it's my oil in there from 1000 to 3000 miles instead of theirs, what's the harm? |

I don't think there is any harm. I change mine at 1000 mi with dino oil. Does it help? Maybe not but I feel better having done it.

Are you going to switch to synthetic after your first change (whether at 1K or 3K)? Is there a recommended waiting period before you should switch to synthetic?
