Smile Starting my EJ207 rebuild, pics and questions

Motor is V9 Spec C Type RA
mileage: approx 90 000 kms of abuse

Ran on crappy US 93 (without a tune!) for almost two years
Then ran on 98 RON with water injection and crazy timing
1.5 bar of boost all day long on VF36 (with peaks over 2 bars!)

Compression numbers came out low, which probably means toasted rings
Decided it was time to give it some love

Plan is to use custom 8.5:1 pistons (Cosworth or Diamond), stock rods and 79mm STI crank

Now for the pics:

Since I didn't have an engine hoist...

Famous big port heads

And the sad part - cracks

Questions:

What can be said from the pictures about the life of motor? I expected pistons to be in much worse condition to be honest

Does that look like factory sealant? I have a suspission that motor has been apart before... plus I don't understand how sand got to the head stud!

How bad are the cracks on the heads?

Sorry heads are toast, I don't think I have ever seen cracks that bad where they extend into the valve seats. As these are large ported heads and expensive you could look into having the cracks ground out and then filler material welded in. The problem is the welding sometimes makes the problem worse the second time around. Clean them up and take them to a good shop to review.

Looks like you had a lot of heat in these heads.

I was afraid of that verdict

I doubt I could find anyone who could do a good weld here in ze vodka-drinking country...

I just talked to the guys who do my work, a local company here in Portland Oregon. They first said that hairline cracks like this usually mean the castings are toast. I pushed them and said it you wanted to repair them what would be needed to be done and how much.

They said ballpark $300-$400 per head which would include grinding out the cracks, welding them up, 2 new seats and repairing the spark plug hole. This cost would not include valve lap and lash This is kinda what I expected.

Looking at the above pictures your heads could be even worse, looks like you have cracks extending into 3 of the 4 seats.

Sorry, time to source some new heads

the heads go for 697.xx a piece on japanparts, and if you buy them soon, they have a 10% discount and 5%back, its about 1.5 times what it would cost to fix them, but they are brand new heads also there is a guy on here selling a complete set of heads for 1500+shipping, PM me if you want details

where is the crack??? how high did you normaly take the engine? i tore my v8 apart and found that it has a 10mm oil pump, from all i have read that to small to be taking an engine to 8500 all the time, but man it lookslike you didnnt get oil right there for some reason

two cracks in between the rings on the first cylinder

I beat the living crap out of that engine, since the car was our former team recce car

I overreved, overboosted, overheated that poor thing and fed crappy gas for half of it's life! I am amazed how it held up agains all that...

All factory motors come with 10mm pump, except for newer cars with dual avcs
I honestly believe that STI had enough R&D to place that pump in a car that revs over 8k from factory
and with my busted rings, I had oil everywhere, especially in the IC

Actually, we measured my crank and bearings and they are close to ideal! Only one little heat mark on one bearing
