Default Rear Camber Plates + Koni Inserts + Ground Control Coilover Kit compatible?

Been searching for info on this for a while, but haven't seen this combo... probably because rear camber plates aren't that common without a true coilover setup.

In order to gain clearance for 255 width tires in the rear of my STi, I'm moving to camber plates instead of camber bolts. I also plan to run the Ground Control Coilover kit and Koni Inserts with '02 WRX Sedan Struts.

When using the GC Coilover kit with stock top hats, the spring mates to the top hat fine (fits to and around a metal piece hanging from the top hat). So I'm wondering how it would mate to Rear Camber Plates like the Cusco or Noltec. Do you remove part(s) from the stock top hats to form an upper perch? How do rear camber plates fit to stock springs?

Thanks!
Russ

Well..

I'm running Konis + Ground Controls on my STi, and have a similar issue. I bought a set of the Cusco rear camber plates, which seem to fit - except for the funny bushing/nut combination. So I'm going to try two things:

1) The threads are correct, but the bushing is too long, so it bottoms on the the shoulder on the Koni before it's tight - so I'm going to "machine" it (dremel + tap, that is). I need to take some off of the bottom so that it will tighten properly, and some off of the top so that the adjuster on the top of the Koni is still reasonably accessable.

I'm surprised that they don't seem to make more bushing+nuts for this camber plate - a lot of people seem to have this issue. I probably wouldn't use it at all, except that Cusco seems to be the only one to make a really sturdy plate for the rear (the Noltec is not).

2) To solve the spring/hat problem, I think I'll try using a Ground Control hat from the front (the silver one that rides on the Koni shock shaft). Since the rear camber plate is pretty much like the front, sans the bearing, I don't see a problem seating the spring hat on the bottom of the plate. In theory, this will probably lower the static ride height some, so be sure to check spring lengths before installing. For mine, I bought a couple 2.5" spring couplers and helper springs from Ground Control, so going to try to get those to work as well.

Good luck,
-Erik

Depending on how much camber you want to run in the rear you shouldn't even need the plates to fit the tires. I assume you are worried about the distance from the strut to the tire, but you shoul dbe able to get anywhere from 1-1.5 degrees of camber with a 255 40 17.

You're right, I'm worried about the distance from the strut to the tire.

Right now (with my stock STi struts, ProDrive springs (not a factor) and rear camber of about -1.75) the 255 width Pilot Sport Cup tires on 17x8.5" SSRs mash right against the strut. If I put a 5mm spacer on, the tire is about 2mm from the strut.

I didn't check... are stock WRX strut bodies much smaller in diameter than STi Strut bodies?

Thanks,
Russ

I don't remember them being much smaller if at all.

What kind of driving do you do? I would get rid of some of that rear camber. Dialing it back to 1.25 should give you plenty of room.

Nope, measured them with a caliper the other day. Exactly the same diameter.

I do pretty spirited street driving and lots of track days.
