Default Fiesta ST, Will ford finally step up to the plate?

http://www.leftlanenews.com/ford-fie...o-america.html

Quote:

The Ford Fiesta ST shown off in near production-ready form at the Geneva Motor Show will officially be sold in North America after all, according to Ford’s Marketing Manager. Speaking at a press event at the Laguna Seca raceway, Steve Ling indicated that the Fiesta is the next Ford model to get the ST treatment.

AutoGuide shared this news, which isn’t too much of a surprise considering a concept version of the car was shown off on U.S. shores at the Los Angeles auto show as well.

A follow-up call from Motor Trend to Ford’s headquarters brings some doubt into the equation, however, as officials said a decision for North American sales of the Fiesta ST hasn’t yet been made. Sales are confirmed for Europe, however.
If it does indeed arrive, the car is likely to be offered as a five-door hatchback only, just like its larger Focus ST stablemate that is due to go on sale in the U.S. anytime now.

The car will be powered by a 1.6-liter EcoBoost inline-four that’s turbocharged to make 178 horsepower and 177lb-ft of torque. It would put it down to the road thanks to a six-speed manual transmission. It would also borrow the Focus ST’s Torque Vectoring Control system to keep torque steer at bay and a three-mode stability control system.

When the car does arrive, it should get the same goodies as Euro-market cars under Ford’s OneFord global strategy. These include Recaro seats and other performance and visual goodies.

If I wasn't floating my '05 GTO payment I'd be taking a test of the Fiesta ST, which is really close to the old SVT Focus both in power and weight.

Isn't this missing the power blade IRS that the Focus has? If they can make it look a little better than the stink bug that is the regular Fiesta and include IRS it would be very appealing.

Personally, I think it looks pretty good for a small hatch....

I'm definitely intrigued by this car. Decent weight/power, turbo-charged so it has definite tuning ability, light, potential for very good MPG. Most importantly though, I'm interested in the price. If they can come in significantly lower than the Focus ST it could be a pretty worthwhile car. Otherwise, I see people ponying the extra grand or two for the Focus...

If this car had the Focus ST drivetrain I'd be all over it...

A bit light on power. Bump it up 50 hp and it could be fun.

Should be an awesome little car. At around 2600 pounds this thing should feel plenty fast and I bet it's a simple tune and exhaust away from 200 whp and 35 mpg. I just hope they don't price it out of the market. This thing should be $21k tops. And I still wish Mazda would release a MS2. I thought the styling on the 2 was much nicer than the fiesta and the car is much lighter to begin with.

180 hp in a 2600 lb car is still going to be a pretty fun little car, and should still be pretty light on its feet. 230 hp in this car with FWD?

No thanks.

If 200hp in a 2700lb RWD car is slow, then 180hp in a 2600lb FWD car isn't going to be any better.

Must every thread become a horsepower pissing contest?

If you can't have fun in a 180hp, 180ft-lb, 2600lb hatchback, then I feel sorry for you...

Discussing the relative merits of horsepower is a pissing contest? On a car forum? Really? LMAO

Like others said a simple tune would produce the numbers your asking for. Wouldnt be surprised if Saleen/Roush/Steeda produced a spicier version either.

It's a 2600lb, FWD, affordable, fun hatch.... what 'merits' do you have for more horsepower, much less 50? Perhaps you crave torque steer and shredded front tires.. While 180hp certainly isnt high, it's modest and proportionate to the car. I'm sure Ford is being conservative as well in the sense that they don't want to dial the horsepower mark too close to the Focus ST. It has it's place in the market. If you want 50 more horsepower, buy a Focus ST..

My '02 Xterra had 180hp and it couldn't weigh 2600lbs if I filled it with helium. Yet it still managed to get me to work and up the mountains at the same speed limit as everyone else.

I'm sure this little Fiesta will move just fine.

I'd bet you could do a fair bit more than 180 and keep the FWD under control. The latest MS3s have a lot more power and manage a decent job of it.

Besides, my comment was more of a joke about how the 2700lb BRZ is slow with 200hp, but a 2600lb hatch would be quick. I see the joke missed the target, sorry

Most cars, even fairly heavy ones, could do everything they need to do with 100hp.

fwd ****box, next.

It used to be that these small cars at least had a respectable drive train. Alfa Romeo GTV, Triumph TR6, MGB GT, Miata, original Mini, Renault 5 Turbo 2, etc. AWD would be better, too bad homologation was eliminated to take the fun out of motorsports. Street legal Fiesta RS please.

2500lb, rwd, affordable, fun sports car with an easily tuned v8. What we used to get with 180 hp, only because it was restricted.

2600lb is not light, so more power. Wake me when its 2200 or less. We had 180hp, or near that, 2600lb cars in the 80s, at least they had rwd and didn't look like ****.

I for one am really looking forward to a test drive. From what little info i can gather. Ford even redesigned the front knuckles to handle the given power.

Don't get me wrong, If i lived in a perfect world i to would like a 2200lb car, but hell lets face it. The only car that came close to that was the elise. That didn't last long either. Its just not going to happen at least with a sensible price tag.

This car is perfect for me and my little family of four. I can toss the kids in back and have a blast on the weekends. I've always wanted a mini but i have to face the reality that i need the extra doors and the price tag is way to steep for my taste.

BlitZ

Now if honda had the balls to put a better engine in the anemic Fit. Then my purchase would be a bit harder.

Right, or you can look at the Mazda 2 which is the same price and basic chassis as the Fiesta.

Wow, talk about forgetting to add the hp in a response. 2200lbs and a decent motor. While most cars are fun with 120hp. I have a big family and they areon track to be bigger than me. The two just needs more oomph stock.... I'm being difficult now, but still. A guy has to have priorities.

I do like the basis of the two, but lets face it. Mazda builds great chassis but for the moment they just won't give anybody a mazdaspeed 2. So will just throw that one into the mix...
