Angry Oil pump concern

I'm in the process of rebuilding my 2.5l from a 02 RS. I started to inspect the oil pump and I realized that someone prior to me had put a 7mm oil pump in. Why would someone do this and would I be ok continuing to run this pump? I had purchased new rotors for a 10mm pump, so that's when I discovered that it was not the same. Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest to purchase a factory 9mm pump (correct for this application), or a 10mm pump.
Larger pump gears need the correct larger pump housing, you must order a complete pump assembly.

picked me up a 10mm pump from a salvage yard today. I'm just going to clean it up and replace what needs replaced. I guess my biggest thing about this whole things is the retard that owned this before me actaully caused most of the problems by putting way to small of an oil pump in the car.

That 7mm oil pump very well could have been stock. I picked up a 06 RS block, with its stock 7mm pump. And guess what, it had a bad bearing.....

Take that used oil pump and throw it away. You should never....ever....put a used oil pump on a car.

I just bought it for the casing. I've replaced both rotors, and all the relief valve parts. What's the problem with using that part of a used oil pump? Hell of a lot cheaper than paying $170 for a new one when I already had the two rotors.

I'll pay the $180 bucks to save my 4000 dollar motor. Reusing oil pumps is just dumb its to cheap to replace it now.

Even if after replacing the two rotors and the relief valve, and everything is on the low end of the spec's in the service manual? Don't understand why you would buy the whole thing if all you needed was the case due to a similiar situation.

Lol. I paid $200 for an oil pump to make sure nothing happens to my Hybrid STi swap. Just to be safe

I got mine with a little discount though.

that's the 10mm pump.

Why not get the 12mm pump? http://www.cobbtuning.com/products/?id=3351
and it's cheaper than the overpriced cosworth stuff (which is probably just the same thing rebadged)

I suppose you could go down the path of checking clearances and making sure they are within factory spec's. You could argue that this confirms the pump is ok and it probably is.
You have at least bought new gears.

Most people as you have seen above (and including myself), consider the oil pump to be such a major part for a relatively low price (compared to the price of what you pay for rods, pistons etc), that they would replace it with a new one to have that confidence that it is as good as possible. I also do the same with water pumps, its just too difficult to have to change the thing if it starts to leak or drops a bearing.

Well guys I took your advice and just bought a new pump. I got the 10mm pump because it would have taken a week to get the 9mm pump that's suppost to be in the car. I'm keeping the car NA so don't really need the 12mm pump. Like some people say "to much can be just as bad as to little".

Thanks for all the advice. I think your all correct in just replacing it for that piece of mind.

Smart man, it might have never come into play but atleast you can eliminate that as a failure point if something goes wrong later.

Good decision.
You are NA you do not have a Turbo to feed oil, no oil squirters taking oil from the system, nor AVCS.
You would not need a 12mm pump for your application.

well, with a 12mm pump and some high pressure with some loose bearings, he could pick up a few ponies

if staying na, the 10mm will be more than enough...are you doing a build? what are you spinning the motor to?

Not doing a build, just a rebuild. I had some cam bearing get damaged. I'm reusing the stock crank, rods, and pistons. Put new crank and rod bearings in (Cosworth race bearings). I then sent the heads off to get machined and got the delta 148 grind. The head shop did an angle valve job on my valves and decked the heads for me. So it's kind of a build but mostly just on the heads. I'll only be spinning it to the stock redline wich I believe is 6200.

Below is the difference between the 9mm pump and 10mm pump, should I fill my oil to the level of the 10mm to ensure I don't suck it dry at say 5900 rpm? Should I maybe try and find a WRX oil pan or would that even fit? With the design of the the oil pan and baffle plate don't think I would have to worry to much about churning up the oil.

Capacity at 80C (176F)
700 rpm Discharge
- pressure 98 kPa (1.0 kg/cm2, 14 psi)
- quantity

4.2 l (4.4 US qt, 3.7 Imp qt)/min. (9mm)
4.6 l (4.9 US qt, 4.0 Imp qt)/min. (10mm)

5,000 rpm Discharge
- pressure 294 kPa (3.0 kg/cm2, 43 psi)
- quantity

42.0l (11.10 US gal, 9.24 Imp gal)/min. (9mm)
47.0l (12.41 US gal, 10.33 Imp gal)/min. (10mm)

Relief valve operation pressure
490 kPa (5.0 kg/cm2, 71 psi) (9mm)
588 kPa (6.0 kg/cm2, 85 psi) (10mm)

Oil capacity (at replacement)
4.0 l (4.2 US qt, 3.5 Imp qt) RS
4.5 l (4.8 US qt, 4.0 Imp qt) WRX

You're not going to suck the pan dry just going to a 10mm pump. You could run the oil level a little higher if you want to. Lots of sand guys run shortened pans and still run the same amount of oil, it's just higher in the pan. Where did you get the specs. on the pumps? thats pretty neat. I don't remember the 10mm having 85 psi at any rpm. As far as using a used oil pump, on some motors all you can get are rebuild kits, such as international. Also by the time you buy rebuild parts such as the seals and rotors or gears you can sometimes buy a new pump. On the subie it's quite a hassle to redo a oil pump just because you were trying to save a buck and unless you use a oil pressure guage you may not know what your rebuilt pump is doing. As someone else already stated, it's easier on the oil pump and the water pump to do it while the motor is out. I ordered a new pump on ebay and got a 7mm pump. I ordered from someone else and got a 10mm pump. Needless to say the 7mm guy got sorry feedback.

Got the specs out of the 02 service manual. If you look the relief valve is at 85psi, the pump normally has a output pressure of 14 - 43psi.

Thanks for the info, I figured that was true, but was just seeing if it was a concern.
