Yes, that's because 9004 and 9007 share the same connector type, but different pin assignments. The harness will need to be re pinned for the bugeye's 9004.

A multimeter helps a lot. When I did my first retrofit, I naively thought I could just try a few combinations and see which one works best. There are better ways.

Didn't Trs replace that harness with an updated one?

I've gone through 3 generations of harnesses for the 9004/9007, the latest one being sometime early 2012 with the "motoControl" branding. Still requires repinning. I don't believe there has been a newer version yet.

Their ballast was recently updated though. Announced in an HID forum less than a week ago.

I am done with the retofit using this writeup as a guide. 5000k bulbs, morimoto minis, 35w ballasts. I sprayed everything black and put the clear cover and amber cover back on for the markers and blinkers. No pics my bad. But it looks clean as ever on a silver car. One detailed step that id recommend for this writeup is the part where you test fit the projectors and bulbs. It took a little thinking because there were some grey areas there. I cant stress enough that you should fit not only the projector but also plan how it fits with the bulbs and dust covers, ballast connection, etc.. rotational adjustment and protection from weather are the two things I worried about when test-fitting those beautifully crafted morimoto hid bulbs and ballasts. When screwing the bulb in it secures in place by notches in the projector, however don't forget to put those rubber gaskets in before the end cap to make it all snug and as tight as your redheaded step sister. Great writeup and the result was better than i could ever imagine! -jt

good morning from ak.. i checked my housings this morning and it looks like the cold got in i didnt use any extra sealant last night. ill have to take them apart and put extra sealant on; yet i dont want it all over the place.. messy stuff i noticed when taking the headlight apart if you get those strings of sealant, blast them with a heat gun!! they go bye bye real fast.

Anyone got any ideas on Ballast mounting options for the bugeye?

i got two ballasts and one silver box on the harness...
theres barely any length on the harness in a few spots and i saw on trs.com that theres an option for 'longer ballast cords' or something. id get those guys, you'll have more wire to play with. The ballast on my drivers side headlight has barely any room to move if the ground is connected to the battery! I ended up grounding it where i believe the stock underseat woofer is grounded... maybe?
So I will have to fab something up for now, but if anyone has pictures or ideas on where they mounted the ballasts please help.

Other than an unexpected night of fixes and some mounting, I am all done for now! The light output is amazing! the cutoff line looks sharp and colorful! the Highs will blind you instantly!

I prefer to add a bit more butyl for insurance. Like this one TRS sells (they may have a different brand now, but it should be similar)

Under the headlight. OEM HID ballast mounts on the bottom side of the bugeye headlights. For anything else, you can add a plate to bridge between the plastic bumper cover and the front clip:

There's a fender bolt just aft of the headlights (circled below). I use that to connect TRS' newer ground connection from the harness to the ballasts.

So I got the kit and did my retrofit today. Will post pics maybe tomorrow because its too dark right now.
TRS sent me a used relay (the silver box on the harness). It's all scuffed up and I figured ill just use it if it works... My HIDs worked for maybe a total of 5 mins and when I turned my fog lights on they just stopped working. The 15amp fuses are good and the fuse on the harness is good. My only assumption is that its that relay box. I re-pinned the 9007 female end just like in the post..

So to the OP: are you having any fog light issues? Before it blew out I could not flash-to-pass or use my fog lights with my headlights.

We are having a group buy over at gmfs (gmfullsize.com)
basically it works out to be, 25 people (or more) in on group buy, gets 25% anything on TRS website.

But we need at least 25 people folks! So let's make it happen and take advantage of some amazing deals on all of theretrofitsource products!

this includes ballasts, bulbs, projectors, even harnesses and accessories. If its on their site, its eligible.

If you want to shoot a pm I'd be more than willing to share updates and progress, and even get you folks on the list.

Akfmx is correct. I had a headlight restoration done at work. We use 2 different sand paper pads, wet sand then polish. Tape is to prevent sanding the surrounding paint.

I'm thinking of doing this for my bugeye wagon. How difficult is this to do? I've never done a retrofit before. Any tips, tricks, or things to look out for?

Opening and making sure the butyl rubber goo doesn't stick onto the headlight lens etc. is important. Otherwise, cleanup is quite challenging.

I highly recommend retrofitting a different set than your oem. If price is a constraint:
  • Consider a replica oem headlight set or someone's oem headlight posted in the classifieds
  • Consider HID bulbs from TRS instead of regular Phillips, Osram, or more expensive alternatives. You can always "upgrade" to better bulbs later. But don't completely skimp and buy no name HID bulbs either.
  • Wait for group buys or garage sales from your favorite vendor. TRS just had a garage sale that offerred 2nd hand Ma-tsu-shi-ta ballasts for a lower price than their aftermarket ballasts. TRS' ballasts offer good value. I wouldn't consider any other aftermarket options that are less expensive.
  • Take your time before deciding which projectors to get. I chose Mini D2S for my first retrofit because I wasn't sure if anything bigger could fit. While I was satisfied with the output relative to the oem halogen reflectors, I later found out that I had ample space in my aftermarket headlights to fit a bigger unit. So I ended up spending money on 2 sets of retrofit systems.
  • Check the beam alignment on the car before resealing the headlights. I've seen too many eager retrofitters in HIDP forum that sealed the headlights back, mounted them back on the car, and found that the alignment was off.
The last one isn't really a cost savings tip; more of an annoyance issue.

Why shouldn't I use my oem headlights? I'm on a bit of a tight budget so I don't think I will be able to purchase another set of headlights. I am in a group buy for the exact kit used in this thread.

Imho, getting an aftermarket replica (of the oem halogen reflector headlights) shouldn't be anywhere near as expensive as buying other versions. There's nothing wrong with retrofitting your oems as long as you're ok with the car being not usable during your retrofit.

If this is your only vehicle, retrofitting your only set means that it can only be done while the car isn't being driven. Depending on how long that is, it could be enough to do the retrofit in a reasonably paced schedule. Or not.

With a second pair to work on, you don't have this constraint. Also, you may have more time experimenting with the many subtle things that would be more satisfying in the long run.

For example, you may consider:
  • tweaking the lens spacing for the right amount of purple/blue colorband
  • adjusting the low beam shield's curvature for the right amount of focus/blur on the sides
  • adjusting the height of the low beam shield for the right amount of hotspot tradeoff between low and high beam modes
  • adjusting or making a foreground limiter shield

I'm not saying all of the list above matters, nor is it a complete list. The last one (less foreground light = easier to see far in the absence of other light source) mattered to me, but wasn't obvious with the time I spent on my first retrofit.

Satrya, to your first point, I'm looking to get a retrofit kit, but I don't want to compromise my current OEM headlights. I'm thinking about buying new ones, but not the complete set. Is it possible to simply buy the external housings off one of the many subaru part websites? If so, which parts would we I need to buy? (I have a 2012 WRX, Premium) Wouldn't that be substantially cheaper than buying a complete set of OEM headlights?

I'm not sure. I've only purchased very few brand new OEM parts. Based on those prices, I expect that you can get a complete aftermarket headlight pair or a previously used pair from craigslist for about the same cost.

2012 WRX premium is still the GV/GR/GH/GE platform, unlike the base Impreza, correct? There are aftermarket ones that come with a sub-par halogen low beam projector. The nice thing about those is that the adjusters (for aiming pitch and yaw, but not roll) can be used for installing a biXenon that is better than the simple Mini H1.

As you may know, the Mini H1 (and the Mini D2S)'s largest advantages are the relatively compact width and depth plus the threaded back that makes retrofitting on housings with reflector very easy. However, bigger and better projectors may work more nicely with housings that were designed for projectors.

Here's an example, for the bugeye headlight. The 2 long screws that are oriented vertically in this picture, as well as the white plastic with a rectangular top, are the pitch and yaw adjusters that came with the aftermarket housing. With a bit of work, you can fit a variety of biX projectors in there. RX350, FX-35, FX-R, e55, e55r (EvoX-R from TRS), etc. But not the larger ones like the Lexus LS' low beam HID. The biX in this picture is an e55r.
