There is absolutely no downside to running synthetic other than the added cost. You can run it longer between changes, it doesn't break down with heat as quickly, it cause less sludge, and it has a higher resistance to gasoline contamination.

There are many myths about synthetic that seems to make people worry about it. When it first came out in the aircraft industry, there were some problems with. They had issues of it not mixing with mineral oils and a few other problems but those are all resolved and have been for decades.

Some people have complained about more oil consumption when using Mobil 1 5w30. I used to use it. My car seemed to use a lot when autocrossing on hot summer days. But that probably has more to do with the fact that it is 5w30 not that it is Mobil 1. I started using 5w30 Mobil in the winter and 10w30 Mobil 1 in the summer. It used a lot less. I now use Royal Purple in the same viscosities. It seems to use about the same amount.

^^^so you run 15w50 which is pretty heavy.

some people have had bad luck with mobile one saying that it shears out to 5w20 from a 5w30 pretty quickly

if you want good oil motul or amsoil is the way to go.

i would rather piss in my engine than use 5w30 M1

'Mobil 1' is MANY-MANY oils and this kind of 'generic' error in description of things here cause a HUGE amount of stupidity and misinformation being spread

whats the difference between all the 15w50 oils that mobile one makes then?

not many people run a 15w50 in the subarus that i have heard of. i dont know if its a bad thing or not. being in a cold climate i cant see a 15w being good but in a warm climate its probably not a bad thing.

and i said 15w50 is heavy but it is a bit thicker than 5w30 no?

How is the diesel oil working out for you? How many miles are on your car? Did you have some sludge build up in your motor or something, and figured the added detergents would help clean it? Or do you use it more to keep it clean in the future?

The reason I am asking is that my POS daily driver Honda has a good deal of sludge buildup from the previous owner neglecting to change the oil often. I was thinking about switching to 10W30 diesel oil. I think Mobil makes that in the Delvac series as a mineral oil.

I don't really want to try some company's snake oil as a solution. Oil is designed to work by itself. They spend lots of time putting together additive packages. Mixing something with your oil can interfere with the additives designed into the oil. I'm not a chemist. I am not going to dump something in my motor that the oil was not designed to have mixed with it and assume it will work.

The diesel oil is designed to clean the engine better than regular oil with more detergents in its additive package. That's why I have been considering it. Chemists and chemical engineers have designed it to clean better than regular oils without having to had some magic bottle into it. That's why I thought it would be good for my situation.

- Mobil1 Turbo Diesel Truck is a 5W40.

- Auto-RX is not a snake oil and has been tested by one of the top oil experts in the country (if not the world). It is a engine cleaner made from esters.

- If you want to use Mobil1 run M1 0W40 (their best 30 weight ) or M1 TDT. Even Blackstone has commented that they see high wear with M1. Check this used oil analysis.

I've run the turbo diesel oil for a year now, put about 25+ k on the odometer. it burns no oil, ever. I go 5,000 miles on every oil change and its never nasty gunky ass thick.

after using it for 3 months or so i had a engine oil analysis done. i cant remember the terms they put it in from blackstone or w/e it was but my engine was fiving cherry for the 65K that where on it. it had less particle contaminants then what is the "good" scale in their % they gave me. basically they said .02-.10% is ok and mine where at .01 or just none. they also said my engine was running so good and from what they found from the oil i used is that i could go 7800k inbetween changes based on the analysis. thats nuts to me, i do 5k which i still think is pushing it. used to always do 3k with my JDM f20b swapped accord. i ran mobile 1 in that as well, just not this oil.

not sure if its cuz i'm the second owner and the first owner treated this thing better then his wife and kids...or if its cuz i run that certain oil...or what. not sure its the oil since i only had been running it for 3-4 months before the oil analysis.

odd blackstone sent me back my info saying my oil/engine was great. even recommended changing it out every 7800 miles. that was based on the turbo diesel oil i was running, and the sample was sent in at 5000k on the oil change.

The 0w30 and 0w20 products are already "available" under the "Advanced Fuel Economy" product line.

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...l_Economy.aspx

I say "available" because Mobil has a shortage of all their products right now due to hurricane damage to their production facility.
