My '96 XP Impreza build
Updated first picture as of 6/24/11.
Original build post starts here- This is what it looked like over the winter- I am doing everything I can afford and have time for to make this a competitive XP car. It started as a '96L 2dr Impreza. I swapped in a WRX engine, did the wiring myself (with help from Nasioc and my co-driver), deleted AC, airbags, radio, and every other extra (not necessary) electrical component possible. Switched to a braille race only battery that weighs 5.4 pounds mounted in the rear passenger seat area. The interior is gutted, no sound deadening, no carpet, no passenger seat or belts. Hacked the dash to lose weight where I could and keep a decent mounting points for the gauge cluster. The front a rear bumper beams were cut up to just support the bumper cover, but don't lean on the bumpers. Fog lights are gone, all AC components are gone, all airbag components are gone, this car didn't come with power windows or ABS, so that saves me a little weight. Last I think is the home-made CF hood, reference this thread. Final weight on the scales was 2367 lbs with 1/4 tank of gas. Power comes from the '02 WRX engine through an 11 lb flywheel and excedy stg 1 clutch to the stock '96 tranny (I like the 3.9:1 ratio). I added a LSD rear diff last year to help direct power to the 225/50R16 V710's at each corner. The engine is helped by no cats, a 3" turbo back with a stromung dual dip muffler, TGV deletes, 665 cc injectors, Grimmspeed Phenolic spacers, an APS 65mm intake, and an enginuity tune to make it all work together. 236whp 240wtq is what it put down on a dynodynamics when it was tuned. Suspension is Koni SA's in stock housings with a GC coil-over kit and 600F 650R springs. Helper springs are 200F 150R with 1.75" of travel in the helper spring at each end. 22mm whiteline bar up front, 24mm Helix in the rear through Helix endlinks. Noltec camber/ caster plates up front with Cusco GC specific camber plates in the rear. Whiteline ALK in the front with custom UHMW front control arm bushings. Chassis stiffening provided by GTspec fender braces (fitment on these is crap, but the work great once you get them in), a GC STI CF front strut bar, Whiteline rear subframe lock bolts, and a Rally Innovations Harness bar (these guys are awesome). Interior additions include a Sparco 333mm steering wheel, a Corbeau Forza seat, Schroth 5pt. harness, assorted gauges on a center gauge cluster, and the ECU has been remounted on the center tunnel (just to be different). My first event this year with the car in the described setup was in Iowa this past weekend. The car felt great and was much faster than I could handle. After some practice in it I think I should be able to post some decent times. Locally I have Steve G's (Mnbiker) XP Miata to chase, so the competition will be good (assuming I am anywhere close to him). In the next few year I am planning on too many mods to list as the budget allows. First and foremost will be ~275 or 12" wide R-comps or slicks, a built tranny with good diffs, and more power. I won't be at Nat's this year or next due to work, but 2010 I am planning on being there with this car to push for a decent placing. Should be a good challenge in the coming years.

Oh, and you should definitely put an EJ257 in it, and get some 15x10" wheels with 275 hoosiers

Note that wheel widths beyond a certain point carry weight penalties in the Prepared category. At least, they used to.....
That said....I'd put some 13's on it just to be that much different! I agree that an EJ257 would be a nice addition once you get a handle on what the EJ20 can do. Jay Storm |

Sean, that's awesome!! First thing I thought when I saw that hood, is "man, he's getting really good". Glad to see you are finally able to make this your full blown toy car now!!! Can't wait to see some video from it once you've adjusted to it
oh, guess what I did this past weekend that reminded me of your garage?...more frozen lateral links Last edited by Homemade WRX; 04-15-2008 at 09:49 AM. |

Geez that's low. Did you find it beneficial to lower it that far? I know I should lower mine another 1/2" or so, but it looks like your car is at least 1.5" lower than mine.
What are your ride heights (if you don't mind sharing). |

Well, I'm guessing running 13" wheels has a little something to do with the overall height as well.

looks like its going well so far. I think u will progress quickly enough to show the limitations of the ej205. if u have the extra weight, always keep an eye out fo that ej257 shortblock.
i think u may be to heavy to see the best results of teh r25. r35 maybe more suitable? bigger bar up front, and eventually ur gonna cage it and ditch the stop gap sreet bracing. then u'll have fun! |

Yeah, the 13" wheels really drop the car down. To the point where it just doesn't roll much at all. That above pic is with 600F 450R rear springs and no bars at either end. My ride heights are 12.5" up front and 13" in the back. Here's another pic in a fairly heavy state of cornering.
I'm anticipating a little raise once we put the 15x10's on..... Jay Storm |

Some video that was taken at an autoX/ high speed run. Very fun event, a short autox course followed by a ~0.2 mile straight before the finish flags. I took 3rd at the event behind a pair of Evo's.

2008-'09 winter update-
I took 1st in XP for one of the two local clubs mostly due to showing up to every event and a certain Miata not being so reliable, and not very drivable in the rain. I'm happy with that, but for next year I want to be competitive when that Miata does run. My local XP competition took 6th at Nats this year 2.244 seconds out of first. Plans include- 275/35R15 A6's on 15x10's lexan Front splitter PnP turbo Turbo inlet equal length headers E85 tune 3" lightweight turboback- just far enough back to be legal Cross drilled rotors front and rear - weight savings built tranny Clutch front and rear diffs 35/65 center diff and I'm aiming for it to weigh in around 2100 lbs ready to run This car won't be going to any road circuts, it won't be driven on the road, it will just be an autox car. I got started last weekend- Next I have to get out those pesky door beams. Compare the wiring to the pictures above from last year. Last edited by speedyHAM; 02-22-2009 at 11:20 PM. |

sounds like quite the recipe sean...I'll be following the thread for sure.
Curious, how much does the car weigh now? |

It was 2367 with 1/4 tank of gas at the beginning of 2008, right now it's probably 60 or 70 lbs lighter than that and dropping weight every time I work on it.
