welcome to stage2
I just went stage2 last week (wow it's fast!) question about the whistle noises which downpipes are the loudiest as far as whistleing? I was a little dissapointed in my ERZ which wasn't as loud as my buddy's turboxs (turbo spool is so loud on that thing)

I'd say TXS is the loudest... Combination of the huge bellmouth and thin metal. I've got an Invidia bellmouth that's loud, but the N1 muffler drowns it out.

I wouldn't go so far as to say the info is false... you CAN do just a downpipe and enjoy the performance benefits of stage two. You are correct though, in that if you want to do right by your turbo, you should lose that cat. It won't so much "suck" out the cat as it will "burn" it out.
If the OP hasn't done the uppipe yet, I doubt it is an immediate danger. I would try to get it done in the not too distant future, though. Last edited by J. Steinbeck; 09-28-2007 at 08:43 AM. Reason: typo... |

The car's going to get faster over the next week or two. Stage 2 is nice, you'll never go back to stock now. |

But running "stage 1" with a larger aftermarket downpipe on the 2.5L engine will definitely result in over boosting. Usually, a "stage 1" tune (like the Cobb "stage 1" tune) will try to keep the wastegate shut as long as possible in an attempt to reach target boost faster. Cobb is warning about this in their "stage 1" documentation. Please check it out. |

Doesn't just a catback smell? Or do I have a leak.
I got the catback and ready to go stage 1. |

quick quote from the 07 WRX map notes. I don't see it in the 04 map notes.
CAUTION!!! DO NOT RUN ANY Stage1 CALIBRATIONS WITH ANY TYPE OF HIGHER FLOWING DOWNPIPE OR TURBO-BACK EXHAUST ON YOUR 2007 WRX. THE Stage1 CALIBRATIONPING HAS VERY HIGH WASTEGATE DUTY CYCLES SETTINGS TO TRY AND BRING BOOST ON AT LOWER RPMS. THESE SETTINGS WILL INDUCE SEVERE BOOST SPIKING AND WILL OVERSHOOT THE TARGETS CAUSING BOOST SEARCHING. THESE SPIKES CAN CAUSE ENGINE DAMAGE. IF YOU HAVE A HIGHER FLOWING DOWNPIPE OR TURBO-BACK EXHAUST SYSTEM ON YOUR 2007 WRX, PLEASE USE THE APPROPRIATE Stage2, VF39, or FP TD05H-18G CALIBRATIONS. The smell issue will go away when you stop using the asstastic Cobb OTS maps and get a proper, legitimate tune.

Useful pic, but he was asking about the UPpipe, right?
The downpipe you have in the picture does have two cats, though. All Sti models have catless uppipes. Actually... I'm pretty sure ALL 2.5 liter WRXs, Sti or not, have catless uppipes. |

That last picture is FUNNY. I'd like to know the details behind that one. That still isn't an uppipe in your first picture, though. The uppipe is located in FRONT of the turbo, and serves as a the pipe that takes exhuast from the manifolds to the input of the turbo. A stock uppipe looks like this: On 2.0 liter 02-05 models, there is a single cat in this pipe. 2.5 liter WRXs have a catless design with a flex section. This is why many recommend gutting or changing out catted uppipes... the increased heat of a stage 2 setup often causes the ceramic cat material to disentigrate, and end up going through the turbo. Bad times. Last edited by J. Steinbeck; 09-28-2007 at 08:41 AM. |
