Suggestions for Basic Setup in 07' Impreza
I am thinking of changing the stereo in my 07 impreza, I am not looking to spend a whole lot of money at this point. (less than 500 with installation) But I would like my setup to be upgradeable in case I decide to go bigger in the future.
I was looking at changing out the head unit and the two front speakers. A couple questions: I was looking at this head unit http://www.crutchfield.com/S-WuMMUXo...0&I=500CDA9856 Any input on this? And I was looking for recommendations on speakers. Do you think I need an amp? Do I need to do anything with the rear speakers? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Since the other guys are so mean and won't answer questions...........
That Alpine HU is nice and will give you a lot of control for future options (3 preamp outs, crossover, time correction, ipod control, sat radio). Speakers - too subjective. Listen to a bunch and then leap. 6.5" components in front and probably none in the rear. Amp can come later, but most people here would say YES for power and clarity. Run the new speakers off the HU for a while. |

Where did I spell recommendations wrong?
That's what I would like to know. Aside from that, I posted this while I was at work where I really didn't have time to wade through search results seeking specific information about a head unit and the questions I asked. But I am familiar with the search tool and use it often. I am sure obtaining search results doesn't take very long (1 minute 30 seconds, okay!) but as we all know, actually reading each individual thread and hoping for some remote connection between that thread and the answers I am seeking takes a lot longer than that. And never mind the fact that the few of you who searched the archives and posted the results into this thread took just as much time as you answering my question probably would have. Thank you to the guy who responded. Last edited by Kn0x; 12-18-2006 at 05:36 PM. |

I stand corrected. I looked up the specs for some unit but it wasn't the 9856 apparently. That might change my recommendation - no TA, no crossover control and no EQ. Maybe a similarly priced Eclipse or the Alpine 9860 but you still wouldn't get Crossover function.

Kenwood KDC-X590? 199 on Crutchfield, cheaper on eBay. No TA but you have EQ and crossovers. Plust Q adjustement and 3 band frequency center adjustment. Not bad for the price. Plus you get USB input, MP3 disks, ect.

I know that a lot of people like the Alpine's, but I've actually got that Kenwood HU. It's got a lot of features for the $, and I'm pretty happy with it. The interface is a bit counterintuitive (my last Kenwood was much easier to figure out), but once you get past the quirks it is very flexible. Lots of crossover controls and a parametric 3-band EQ to fix the most blatant FR problems. It is also in the in the same price range as the Alpine that you're looking at. I've got a buddy that loved his Alpine, so I can't knock them, but the Kenwood offers great bang for the buck. |

I love my Alpine 9835 but it's sad to see that the nicer features are being removed from the Alpines of today. I suppose they want to sell you a processor so they can make more money.

You'll learn that the quick-wits on NASIOC (or so they see themselves) love sarcasm very dearly.
Audiophiles typically say that rear speakers are anachronous, but I disagree. While I usually fade the sound toward the front a little, rear speakers are there for a reason. For a limited budget like yours, go listen to a bunch of speakers as some here have said. Same goes for head units. You could save on installation cost by ordering your stuff from a place like www.crutchfield.com. Their customer service is spectacular, too. Alpine, Eclipse, Nakamichi, Denon and Kenwood eXcelon are probably the best head unit manufacturers out there, with a few stragglers from other companies coming pretty close (like Pioneer Premier). Some of the other ones are spotty at best, but it depends on what you like, ultimately. You can get a very nice deck for a couple hundred bucks. =S2= |

I with Siper2 and I vote for rear speakers IF you can afford them. Forget what you're supposed to do - do what you like and I like having rears. They're certainly not a priority compared to good fronts, an amp, etc.

Just put the less 'bright' speakers in the rear MOMO > Type-R. I got the rears and after some fine tuning, I'm happy I did. They should have been my last purchase in the system, admittedly. That way I'd have the money for the PG X400.1 ~Levi Last edited by ScubaruImpreza05; 12-19-2006 at 08:33 PM. |
