not sure..but i think if your caught drinking and driving underage, you won't have to worry too much about insurance rates for a while since you'll probably lose your liscense for sometime...but i'm not sure, whatever the case..

Yes, most states forward your citations to the DMV...

Why wouldn't they? Insurance is a judgment of risk, and some kid illegally drinking would definitely been seen as a bigger risk than a kid who obeyed the law.

I kinda don't think they do. I can't tell you how many kids got MIPs at WSU while I was there. I think your insurance only gets to know about traffic violations.

I reserve the right to be wrong.

I think we all know what a DUI will do to your record, but I imagine Matt is asking about non-driving related underage drinking fines.

If you were fined for underage drinking while not operating a motor vehicle you'd think you are in the clear. Just remember, insurance companies can (not that they necessarily do) look at your police record (if by underage we are talking less than 17, that should be out of their reach).

Like bigbird said some states it does. Wisconsin is one of them. Does not matter if you where driving all that matters is you got a underage.

PA will take away you license till you are 21 driving or not. I you don't have a license yet you won't be able to get one till you are 21. I could be wrong about the second comment, it might be 18. PA is really hard on teens drinking.

I have a friend who was arrested for possession of alcohol...he fell asleep in the back of a car which was subsequently backed into a ditch by a driver who was DUI. The driver had his license revoked. The sleeper still has his license, but I'm not sure whether his insurance bumped up.

It's always a good idea to err on the side of extreme caution/pessimism with cars and alcohol.

I'd get myself a good lawyer if I were you. In the end, you're going to be paying someone...might as well be someone helping you out, right? Well, that was my line of thought with my speeding ticket.

Good luck.

How bizzarre you Americans can be some times.

Why would drinking under age affect your driving insurance and licence. You weren't drinking and driving so whats the link???

Now if you were drinking and driving then you deserve everything you get, but having a drink underage has ZERO link to your driving habbits.

You could always move to the UK of course, legal age for drinking is 18.

P.S. I never did understand how you guys can be allowed behind the wheel of a lethal object at 16 (a car), be allowed to screw up your life by getting married at 16 , usually way to early to be mature enough, yet not allowed to get pissed till 21, where is the logic in that one??????

Don't forget we can own firearms at 18 and hunting rifles before then!

But a beer on the weekend before you're 21? NOOOOOOO that's EVIL and DANGEROUS!

Of course, I am in South Carolina where it is still illegal to buy any alchoholic beverages on Sunday.

Actually, SC allows purchase of long guns at 18, pistols at 21, which is of course in accordance with Federal law.

And South Carolina does allow sale of alcoholic beverages on Sundays (and has since 1994 or thereabouts) under certain conditions: it has to be sold in an eating establishment, they have to apply for a special permit for each Sunday they wish to sell, etc.

And they do not allow sale to persons under 21 in any circumstance, which is not a requirement of Federal law but one of the strings attached to receiving Federal highway funds.

But the question at hand: it depends. Depends on who gives you a fine for underage drinking and who they report it to. A college, for example, may fine a student for possessing alcohol in the dorms. That might never have any effect anywhere else. If you get busted for using a fake ID in a bar, I doubt it would affect auto insurance premiums because it has nothing to do with driving - if you get arrested for burglary, for example, same thing.

Some states have discussed (don't know if they have done it) automatic suspension of license until age 21 if you get caught for a DUI while under 21. Will that affect your insurance premiums? Most definitely.

"Why would drinking under age affect your driving insurance and licence. You weren't drinking and driving so whats the link???"

Lucky bastage. When I got my speeding ticket eons ago the cop "showed up" by affidavit. Somehow he was able to make a statement and not show up. But I had to be there.
Oh well. I got to write a 500 word essay on why I shouldn't speed and it got dropped.

Matt I grew up in Wisconsin and my father is a police officer there. Well needless to say I had to run from the cops a few times (never got caught though.) So he called up the insurance agent to find out what would the insurance company do if I got a underage. Since I was on my fathers insurance at the time they would have dropped me if I got a underage fine. So his point was clear you get caught your not driving anymore (unless you get your own insurance.) Well of course myself being as faster then any cop I always could out run them on foot any day. And it DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU WHERE DRIVING. I tell you some people have thick skulls on here. (not you Matt)

lol.. also true john

btw: since i had a HUGE clarical err happen involving my case, and the officer did not show up..guess what?? Gary gets off..no harm done to me, no fines, no record, no nutting.

I had on the ticket and on the peice of paper i got in the mail from the police station that i had my court date TODAY at 10:30am..so i show up..the court had MY ticket there..as being scheduled for that time slot, i checked in, everything good..judge comes in... i wait untill my turn, take the stand, starts asking me about incident, where it happened, etc. etc... guess what..today was the day for elk grove village at that time..and my officer was from BG and i needed the BG dude to be there for my case..and he wasn't.. but i WAS on the right day according to my files and the judge's book as well..BUT turns out that we both got wrong info..it was tommorow at 9..no idea how we BOTH got wrong info..but we did.. and since it was a HUGE claricle error by law it has to be dismissed, b/c the judge and i had proof of the scheduling and the officer didn't show..so they let me off. All i have to do tommorow is show up say hi to the same judge as today and pickup the paper..already signed and everything. just have to let the cop know he made a BIG booboo

matt..hope you get my luck
