I don't know which one I've had, but it was probably the 120 minute.

I've really been wanting to head down to Yakima or Prosser and pick up some fresh hops. Although, I don't think you get people standing on the side of the road selling hops like you do with cherries. So, I wouldn't even know how to go about buying such a small amount of hops. My guess is most farmers wouldn't even care if I went and snipped a few ounces out of a line or two. Any idea on how long they keep if they're not vaccuum packed?

From what I've read, they will stay good for maybe a week out in the open at room temp. You can put them in a freezer and wrap them in aluminum foil and they'll stay good. Everytime I drive past the hop fields I just want to pull over and grab bine after bine and throw them in my car haha. I bet if you go to the farm and talk to the owner and ask if you can walk around and smell/pick some, they'd probably let you. Barter with them for some beer hahaha

OMG that beer sounds amazing! Good luck! The only black ale (lager so not really an ale) that I've had was Sessions Black from Full Sail. It was decent, nothing to write home about but I'd drink it again. I'd love to find this Vertical Epic somewhere...
If I had the room to do all-grain I would definitely try this beer out. Good luck if you decide to brew it!

uh, good luck finding the VE. they make limited releases each year and if anyone's holding on to a bottle or 10 they sell for quite a lot. i got my hands on the 07 and 08 but i drank them since i wasn't interested in hanging on to a bottle for a year

the Session Black was decent. makes for nice drinking beer. i wouldn't mind giving a copy a try if only i knew where to start heh.

If anybody needs a taste-tester, let me know.

I used to be a professional coffee tester, so I know my ****. And like beer. So yeah.

Yeah, I figured it would be a limited release. It would still be awesome to get a hold of it. Maybe I'll try to find an extract recipe for it and give it a shot. If I do, and it turns out well, I'll let you know. Maybe I can ship a bottle or two also.

Well, I picked my fresh hops last night from a co-worker's neighbor!! I have 3 x 1 gallon bags of Cascades and 1 x 1 gallon bag of unknown hops. Alpentalic, if you want to meet up and grab a bag of the cascades, you're more than welcome to. I will be out of town this weekend but let me know if you want to! I'm also going to be getting a rhizome or two from the guy so I can try to grow my own too!

20qt Boiling pan
6.5 gallon Carboy
5.0 gallon carboy
siphon
Bubbler thing on top
5.0 gallon Bottling bucket.

What else? Ive been reading this thread and getting really excited about it. Thanks for your help guys.

Presenting the Krausen that would not die....wow. This is the first time i've had the krausen stay around for so long. Going on day 14...I've never had one go over 7 days. Anything to worry about?

I know it's been a while but hopefully you sprang for the glass v.s the plastic buckets for the primary and secondary. The boiling kettle you want something that will at least hold 3 gallons...the bigger the better. No need to spend huge $$ on one though. The primary Carboy I would strongly suggest the 6.5 so you don't need to worry about fashioning a blow off tube or anything. Siphon I would go with the auto siphon...makes things a little easier. Throw in some rubber stoppers, plastic funnel, mesh strainer, plastic spoon and I'd say you're good to go.

I've used liquid yeast twice and both times it took forever to take off and both times the krausen hung around for much longer than a week. The second time it took so long to take off that it got infected and I had to throw the batch out. Never using liquid yeast again.

wow..really? Does the Krausen drop more quickly with the dry yeast in your experience?

Just saw this thread.. All I can say is Mr. Beer FTL!

I got a Mr. Beer home brewing kit for Christmas like 2 years ago and EVERY batch I made with it has tasted like absolute ASS. Followed the instructions to a "T" and it never works out.

Next time I get the hankering for brewing my own suds, I'm going about it the right way.

Extra Pale Ale from Northern Brewer kit and added an extra pound of amber DME to the mix. After 2 weeks in the bottle it was good....now after 5 weeks in the bottle it's I've heard people dry hopping this recipe which is crazy...it's already hoppy for me

I actually ended up getting a Brewers best kit which came with a 6.5 gallon bucket and a 5 gallon glass carboy plus all the autosiphon stuff, wire brushes, bottline wand, and bottleing bucket. After brewing my first kit (Brewers best Oktoberfest), i purchased a 6 gallon Better bottle, a large bottle of Star san and started a brewers best hybrid. I bought the english brown ale kit but bought different hops (fuggle and another english one) and then used liquid yeast.

The oktober fest is done and tasting pretty good. The Brown ale should be done in about two weeks. Going to start a Stout pretty soon. This is definitely a fun and rewarding hobby.

Nice How do you like the Better Bottle's? I'm actually trying my first Stout tonight. It's a sweet stout from Northern Brewer. I just started using the Star San (instead of the Iodine)....something comforting about the bubbles. Happy brewing

Have a batch of Brutal Bitter to keg next week, as well as a batch of Caribou Slober to put in the secondary next week. Its so nice to be brewing again, its been well over a year.

Also if you havnt seen this... watch it!

Legit kegerator. I've only done two batches of beer.
I'm more of a wine kinda guy. Easy stuff.
