My EZ30R H6 Mission - Its Alive!!
Hey, Im in NZ and I have a Legacy GTB which i decided wasnt upto scratch, plus its CRAP twin turbo motor had yet another issue with me. It thought it would eat two pistons, spray oil on the turbos and catch on fire, im glad i live just round the corner from the fire brigade
After deciding that rebuilding a twin turbo wasnt goin to cut it i went and got an EZ30R with ACVS and thought that would be a more reliable swap. Plus everyone seems to be doing it these days so i thought id jump on the band wagon. Basically its almost done now with the help of a few awsome guys i have meet in the last few weeks. (James @ Speed Tech in Hamilton, and David @Dtech Motorsport) This is kind of inteneded on a rough guide for anyone wanting to do the same conversion as well as me ranting about mine. This is how it goes anyway... ECU First issue with the EZ30R was what computer am i going to use to run it, running a factory seemed like suicide after reading about all of the issues everyone else is having, so i had a prod around at aftermarket ECU's. Because I am from NZ and so are Link, I had my heart set on using a Link G3, even though they couldnt quite run the R spec yet because of the trigger pattern. It turned out that was the only thing holding them up, and all they needed was a complete motor to get it finished. I had one and they were less than 2 hours away, so they used my motor to figure it out and are using my car to figure out their base tune on the dyno before it gets released onto the market. So for all of you guys wanting an ECU for your EZ30R, give Link a week or two and it will be released to public that the Link + G3 runs the bad boy. Mechanical Side Swapping the motor was easier than putting my TT motor back in as far as dropping it into the hole and sorting out how it would hook up to the gearbox. By avoiding a step by step process on how to put a motor in, the only things that werent a straight bolt up was the following 1) Radiator, I couldnt use the TT radiator because it was entirly different and i was going to need a H6 radiator, I found one at a nice price from a subaru specialist wreckers and used that. But this spawned my next issue 2) Thin radiator fans, the standard H6 fans are quite deep and they wernt going to fit in my tight little engine bay in a million years, so what you need to do is search your soul off through a radiator catalogue until you can find one that is about 60mm thick that has either a 12" or 11" fan 3)Throttle body, the standard throttle bodies on the EZ30R's are fly-by-wire, or in idiots terms, controlled by a solenoid and an electrical input. Because of some liability issues i had explained to me the Link G3 cant use the standard throttle body, so i had to find a mechanical one with an Idle Control Solenoid on it, so i went found one from a Ford AU XR6 Falcon (an Australian made ford that is in GREAT abundance in NZ and Aus) as it was big and cheap. I got the holes slotted and the face that bolts onto the manifold shimmed, then it went straight on. Everything else that needed thought about was just normal swapping issues, the power steering pump ran the same pressures as my cars current power steering so i had that pipe welded up and mount a reserviour off my chassis I needed to get the A/C lines off the A/C pump TIG welded up to my cars original A/C lines. Exhaust needed to me made up, the standard EZ30 manifolds didnt fit around the front crossmember so i had new manifolds made up with it. Needed heater pipes off a WRX as the inlet outlet for the EZ30 was different to my EJ20R Here are the only half decent pics i managed to get with my phone before is sent it in for the wiring loom to get put in, I thought id avoid that part as I regard wiring looms as the devil and they are too easy to stuff up. When i get i back hopefully in less than a week from now il post up the dyno sheet and decent photos of everything finished, I have tried my hardest to make everything look factory, not a complete weekend cable tie and duct tape misson Clint My engine bay after i dropped it in. Its far from where it is now. I was just so happy to see it in there My Exhaust Last edited by anotherwhitegtb; 10-28-2007 at 06:42 AM. Reason: Changed details |

To the OP: Awesome progress on your swap! Get some pusher fans for the radiator. If you're still looking for a cable for your throttle body, try an STi ver5 throttle cable. I look forward to seeing your car running (mine, too). Mick |

Cheers guys
For the fans i spent my afternoon avoiding work searching through a catalogue until i found some, they cost me a fair bit but the motors are fully reccessed into the fan, they are only 51mm thick at that biggest part. I had to keep to using puller type fans as my A/C would have turned into an expensive nightmare otherwise trying to fit pusher fans in. |

Okay, for all of you that are dreaming of using a link for the EZ30R, link is releasing the trigger on tuesday next week (9th Oct) as long as their simulation goes to plan and their are no bugs. There is a certain way they want everything wired up though to avoid issues but im not really finding to much out about this, link will be able to give you this if you intend on using a Link G3 for your EZ30R.
As for my wagon, the plan is to be driving it off the dyno in 7 days time, and everything should be finished and look as factory as a brought one. Ill post the pictures up when its finished |

Drum roll please, I now have my car running with ACVS running a closed loop with the Link + G3 and the final product looks alittle bit like this!!
Engine Bay Shot Throttle body and Pod filter, i have almost finished making a very tidy alloy cold air box to go around this, it will look the business when its done!! My Radiator clearence, The Overflow (Coke Bottle) tank should be here tomorrow morning, its a very nice looking alloy one to look nice a porno under there with the cold air box when that is done!! And finally a video of my hunny going Huge thanks and a bow for Dave Herdegeen @ Dtech Motorsport for making it work with the link!! |

That is truly stellar news that Link has the G3 setup for the EZ30R now. If I understand correctly, they not only got the trigger pattern all figured out, but ran your engine on a dyno stand to get an initial tune?
The car does sound fabulous! Pat Olsen EZ30R sitting in garage for last year waiting for engine management to get figured out... |

Im still waiting for a final dyno to tune my car to its fullest, but we have to do a base tune again when i get the shorter headers made up so that it is a bit more standardised for everyone else, (plus the reasoning behind doing this is another story in itself!!) |

Speaking of headers, if you've got any pics of the underside of the car up on a lift I'd love to see the headers you've got now. Last edited by Patrick Olsen; 10-29-2007 at 07:53 AM. |

You can get this to work with an auto, but I wouldnt really class it as an ideal way going about it.
If you want to turbo it you might aswell get a 6 speed STI box so your driveline doesnt end up own3d. If you do that then you need to do everthing else aswell (hubs, rear diff, brembo brakes etc). If you are keen on turbo charging it though, the best turbo in my opion is to use a GT35/40R and run it on about 8psi, you should be able to make 300kw@wheels (402bhp). Quote:
If your bank account allows for it and you want something that has been made with a fully tuned length etc (plus they are stainless), these headers here are the business, I would LOVE a pair so much, they are sicker than a hospital ward in a 3rd world county Il try and get some more photos too, im not really proud of them, I could have done much better but i was in a rush and they werent intended for been on there forever, but they do sound nice, thats for sure. Yeah, you got it, the LinkPlus G3 works on the EZ30R, the one with variable valve lift and timing. And as far as I am aware after spending way too long trying to find something for my car, The LinkPlus G3 is the first ECU in the world to run a closed loop on a EZ30R.

Can you PM me the details of who to talk to about this? I'd like to investigate this as an alternative to the Hydra I'm currently running. Thanks! Andy Edit: And I'd love to see a dyno chart for the engine with functional AVCS... Last edited by adhowe70; 10-28-2007 at 08:21 PM. |

I'm glad to see people making progress on their swaps. My motor is on its way here from Gruppe-S, I was going to swap it into my STI, but I decided that it would be better ot swap in into my 1995 L and get it running first then do the swap in the STI.

I watched your video about ten times this morning. Needless to say, I am very eager to get my car done. The sound of a flat six is beautiful.
