I'm you 6 months in the future.
I wanted to know all about welding and how to do it. I read all I could, looked at videos, watched shows. I'm now enrolled in my first welding class as a local community college. GMAW (mig). Best thing ever. I learned more about it the first two weeks (4 classes) than I ever did in two years of all that other stuff. I went to lay my first bead in lab and it had to be the worst lump of molten metal to form from that gun in years. Wouldn't hold up a paperclip in a light breeze. My brother asked me what it was like. I said, Quote:

Agreed,
There is no replacement for time in the booth under your hood. A tech school or community college is your best bet, though the cc will be much cheaper. Its a great skill to know, just wish there were some good jobs out there. I spent the last year welding and got my 6G cert. Had a blast, met some great people, movin on..... |

^^^ That link is filled with good info. Welding is hard once you start but the more you do it the better you get.

^agreed. I've been watching his stuff lately. I knew MIG, but wanted to get into the details of TIG.
Either sign up for classes or if you have some general welding back ground, just go and buy a welder and start in. There is zero replacement for practice... |

Learn the difference in metals, welding machines and processes. That way when you go to "practice practice practice" you won't be 100% in the dark. Knowledge is half the battle; the other half is performance.

Welding Tips
I suggest you take a welding course like the other gentlemen suggested, I completed a 40 hour course last fall and learned more that i could imagine, not all from the instructor , many students have experience and tips. One suggestion, but a good auto dim helmet, invest once in it and get a good size visor. Also save up for a good welder, you will have it a long time, Good luck

Welding is all about practice. Its takes time to become good especially with tig welding. Over on honda-tech.com believe it or not they have a good welding and fabrication forum.

i went out and bought tube benders, brake, nocher, i read up on everything. a friend who welds for a living came over and started pointing and laughing. over time i'm more consistent than he is. the only real way to learn is to get after and mess up everything. two things are for sure pick one thing and get really good at then move on to the next thing, and prep prep prep. your weld are only as good as your prep on the surfaces. i'm finishing a 6 point cage on a car thats taking 5 months but its clean and custom
