Default Wearing though tires about 4 every 3 months. Help!

I'm running Yokohama AVID V4 there a all-season tire that works great durring the colorado winters out here but durring the hot dry summers i'm already on my secound set.

I drive hard alot and love playing in the moutains. the grip on them is ok but i have learned to live with it. my only problem is the i'm super poor becouse i go though the tires really fast.

i have a couple of questions.

1. I was told that the all-season blends are softer for colder weather and even though there tread weat 360 that they will wear faster then a summer blend lower tread wear rated tire. Is this true?

2. Can i run Falken Azenis as a daily driver tire or will i wear though them just as fast as the Yokohamas i have on there right now?

3. is anyone running the Azenis on there car as a daily driving tire? (I know they have great grip for auto-x but i have Kuhmo 'r' rated tires for that)

4. Sports Compact car says they love the Azenis is that becouse they get theres for free or becouse they are a good street tire.

thanks for your help?

How are you wearing out the tires? On the shoulders? All the way across the tread?

How many miles have you actually driven on each set? Telling us you wore them out in 3 months doesn't really tell us anything. The Avid V4's have a 45,000 warranty on them - did you wear them out before that? Did you take advantage of the warranty?

When was the last time you got an alignment? What were the specs?

Until you answer those questions we really can't help you out with your "problem". My guess is the alignment question is the really important one, but I could be wrong. As for your questions...

#1 - A resounding "NO". Don't ever go to whoever told you that for tire advice again, as they clearly don't know much about tire ratings.

#2 - The Azenis has a significantly lower treadwear rating, so based strictly on the numbers it will wear faster than the Avid V4s. Someone will probably point out that you can't compare treadwear ratings from one manufacturer to another, which is true to some extent, but I'd say in this case it's a safe bet that the super grippy summer tire will wear faster than the all-season tire with the 45,000mi warranty. That's assuming you change nothing on the car but the tires. If you put on the Falkens and fix whatever problem is causing your excessive tire wear, then the Falkens may actually outlast the mileage you've been seeing from the Avids.

#3 - I don't personally, but I know of a number of guys who do run them as daily driver tires.

#4 - Don't just read SCC, look at the SCCA National Tour results in the street tire classes this year. The Azenis is pretty much dominating. It is a seriously grippy tire with a seriously great price. It's also pretty noisy, and not the greatest wet tire in the world, but.....

Gotta love it when someone posts looking for help, then doesn't come back and give any information that we need to actually provide that help. Why bother to ask in the first place?!

At least the rest of us can learn from your answers, whether or not the original poster comes back to check on things. I know I appreciate the knowledgebase that folks like you, gtguy, rkkwan, and so many other people bring to the floor.

Well, since I haven't posted one of my world renouned "I love my Azenis" posts for a while, I'll break in my new computer with one.

To date, my 215-45-16 Azenis on a 2001 RS sedan has seen 11k miles, 11 track days and has 2 tires with 4/32" min tread left and 2 with 5/32" left. I run 38F/34R on the track and 40 all around on the street to even out the wear and rotate the tires before every track day to keep wear as even as possible. The tires work better than the RE-92's in the wet (including standing water on Rt 89 in VT at 70mph) and also in the wet on the track. I run 4 pots on the front and WRX sized rotors on the rear. The only down side of the tires is that they are louder than RE-92's and they will follow road irregularities and crowns because of their stiff side wall. They do suck in snow....but I also have Blizzaks.

Track day #12 with this set of tires on Friday, Aug 23rd.

I have been running the Azenis on my daily driver for about 4 months and 4000(?) miles, plus probably more than 100 auto-x runs. They still have plenty of tread. The ones that were in the front for most of the time (should have rotated them more frequently ) have some wear on the outside edge (auto-x!), and the tread is much lower on the inside half, might be from driving with a messed up factory alignment for a while, and running a little toe-out after that. The tires that spent most of the time in the rear look almost like new.

I know that some people say that they're noisy, but I personally don't observe that, they seem completely quiet to me most of the time, except for some kinds of pavement where they start "whining". I've had no problems in the rain so far. I also found that they follow road irregularities, especially under braking the car won't go straight without substantial steering input. It doesn't bother me too much, but I could imagine that others would find it disturbing.

Apart from that: What Pat said! Certainly get your alignment checked if you haven't done that yet.

since you are on tight budget. I say go for the Bridgestone RE730s as your summer tires. they will last you a life time.

Hmmm, I've had my 730's for about 7k miles, autox 2x a month, and I like to play in the dirt. I love them and the grip is great, but they are starting to chunk like crazy, and the shoulders are wearing fast!(recently added -1.5 camber in the front)

Default Ummm...

I disagree ... the RE730s are wearing out fast. They're NOT cheap however they do grip VERY well. I use it for daily driving and had it for a little over 3 months ( 7000+ mles ) and have used it at the DRAGON 1x and the rest is just daily driving ... YES I take 90%of the corners HARD but it's so much fun. I will switch to the Falken Azenis next time if I can't get a good deal on the RE730s again. Basically I decided that if I continues to have fun ... which I plan ... I need to plan $1K each year just for TIRES.
