ACT Flywheel or Fidanza flywheel?
Any recommendations? Either going with the 9lb Fidanza or the 9.6lb ACT.

Too light. Go with ACT 14 lb flywheel. Easier to drive, less likely to warp if abused.

If you go below ~13 pounds, you will likely have all sorts of problems.....don't do it...

Diversion,
I just ordered a ACT clucth/flywheel combo . My sincere opinion is to suggest you to get a 13-14lbs flywheel. From what I heard, the 9lbs will make your engine hesitate on the take off, it is harder for the engine to rev at first due to the lack of inertia. There is no doubth that the 9lbs flywheel will make your car rev up faster however it can be a disavnatage when launching the car from a stop. With the 13lbs one you can't go wrong, you are talking about 10lbs lighter than stock . Another issue that you might encounter is the fact that you may get a CEL light. This was just my opinion.... |

I have the ACT Street lite Flywheel on my 02 WRX (13.9lbs version) and I still got a CEL, but the flywheel feels great! I think 14lbs is the magic wieght for our car...when dealing with flywheels.

I don't see how launching would be slower by having a 9 pounder flywheel other than the fact it makes launch/driving around trickier. On my previous Prelude, I put a 9.5 lb Fidanza flywheel on it.. the stock was 20 or so lbs.. Honestly hardly felt a difference between the two in any condition. It revved ever so slightly quicker (out of gear) and could notice zero difference flooring it through the gears. I can't see how the WRX would change so tremendously going from 23 or whatever lbs the stocker is to a 9~ lb flywheel. I understand it will throw a CEL.. I've seen people shave 2 to 3 seconds off their AutoX times after switching to a 9 lb flywheel. The only disadvantage I can think of is the lack of engine load to build boost in lower gears.. although the added accelleration should either make up for it or even things out. And another 15~ lbs off the car is always a positive thing.

Jay.....you really can't compare a high compression NA motor to a EJ20. They are different.
....and ask any of the guys that race(NOT the straight liners)....a (very) light flywheel is great for the track, but none of them would think of trying to drive one on the street. The ~14 pound flywheel is the better choice of the bunch, for the street. |

I don't see how compression has anything to do with how the weight of a flywheel and how it will affect the driveability of a car. Hrrrm.

It's not just the compression, it's the power band on the vehicle and the way it reacts to load. The Prelude has a different engine so it will not act the same, simple as that. The take off on the WRX can actually be faster with the lighter flywheel, but you have to be a little more harsh with it and faster on the gas pedal modulation. The reason why people who first get the lighter flywheel feel take offs are now slower is because the flywheel has less momentup to force the rest of the drivetrain to catch up to the engine speed.
