Flyboy, what was the mileage on your Impreza when you did the diffs/tranny fluid?

I don't think so. It shifts a bit smoother now, especially 5th gear which was a little rough, but it seemed like that was normal when i asked a few months back

And the handling with the 19mm bar is impressive. I think going to a 22 would be way to much without a bigger bar in front (does anyone even make one?).

And driving in crosswinds is much easier now, the car doesn't get blown around quite as much. I couldn't imagine driving a car with the sway bar

Isn't it prudent to use the same weight oils when replacing them with aftermarket fluids?

The owners manual is all over the place with the differential fluids. It's got monograde 80W, 85W and a 90 (whatever that is). Then multigrade 75W/90 at the bottom. As long as it's GL-5, I guess either one of those is okay.

The AMSOil that I used was the same weight. It was the one recommended by AMSOil for the 2012 Impreza. AMSOil is supposed to be "slicker" and warms up quicker than the conventional oils - especially in the Midwestern Winters. I replaced the Diff Oil @ 3001 miles. Didn't do the tranny oil as I have a CVT.

It is the same weight as what is recommended in the service manual (75W90). And I felt no difference in shifting between before and after the tranny/diff fluid changes. But I was surprised with how cruddy the fluid looked that came out of the rear diff. Apparently this is normal for the rear diff fluid (I asked in another thread).

G, I had the dealership change my CVT fluid @ 10k miles for the same reason I changed the diff fluids. It was dirty, thin and full of metal shavings. It's expensive at almost $300 but it thought it was worth it plus I've changed all the other fluids so I wasn't going to leave the transmission neglected with the factory fill.

I have the manual tranny, so I haven't researched the answer to this question:

What makes it so hard to change the fluid in the CVT tranny? Why did you feel comfortable doing the rear diff fluid change yourself, but not the CVT fluid change?

It wasn't cost effective. They only sell the CVT fluid in 5 gallon buckets and you don't need that much. With tax, the fluid alone cost as much as the complete service.

there's not another brand of cvt fluid you could have used that comes in smaller quantity container.

Unlike the engine oil and gear oil which can be any brand synthetic 0W20 and GL-5 75W90 respectively. Subaru doesn't list any compatible CVT fluid. The service manual reads "Specified fluid: Subaru CVT oil for Lineartronic." You won't find it in any store or in quart bottles.

I was curious about this before I saw your message above, so I went to the Amsoil web site. Sure enough, Amsoil doesn't even offer a product for the CVT transmission fluid.

That's a surprising bummer.

Does it hurt the lifetime of the vehicle with such dirty fluids? Will they change any of it under warranty?

I doubt that having dirty fluid in the rear diff causes any harm. They are all that way. I'm told that the next time I change the fluid out of my rear diff, the Amsoil fluid I put in will look cruddy too. So I assume that looks are deceiving and that the fluid is doing its job in the rear diff regardless of its appearance.

I changed my rear diff and tranny fluids because I like to be proactive. But I doubt it was necessary. You should be safe following Subaru's recommended change intervals.

Default Fuel Range Computer

Hi Guys

I would like to get some input on others who own the 2012 Impreza 2.0i. I have the Premium 5 door wagon. When I purchased the vehicle I loved how we had a fuel range computer which told us the range we had left in the tank.

However, I've noticed lately that its been either acting up or off. I use to see on a full tank an average of 420 miles - 450 miles UPON fill up. However, now when I fill the tank up, it says my range on a full tank anywhere between 380-340miles?!?! what gives?!?!

I thought it could have been my driving habits but I even started to watch how I drove the car (commuter, don't go hard on the pedal or anything)...but I am just confused as to whether its the computer that is acting up? a leak? (not really possible since its a brand new car, at least i hope not). Could it also be the weather? I live in socal and its been in the 90s or high 80s lately compared to when I bought the car earlier this year?

Any input? I dont drive in much traffic (lucky me, i go to work and leave work early enough to avoid most of traffic). So not sure whats up. I drive a mix of freeway and surface streeets, mostly freeways.

Anyone else have the same situation? Any solutions or advice?

There is no interval at all for the transmission or differentials. I just wanted to get some of the crap out (transmission was nearly as dirty) next time i do them will be at 100k per amsoil's recommended interval

Oh, and i got that car to slide yesterday attempting to take a corner at 35-40 with my new 19mm rear sway bar. Caught me off guard, i blame the tires though as it was sprinkling so the street was wet, but i have never had a car do that before.

I assume that the range indicator is just a function of avg mpg x gal of fuel remaining. So I would compare it to your avg mpg readout after your refills (without resetting trip odometer). The distance remaining should fluctuate proportional to avg mpg.

I am in no way qualified to make these assumptions, lol, but i figure that would be the easiest way to calculate it since the car already has algorithms to figure out instant/avg mpg.

true, i figure i could do that. i was just wondering what everyone else was getting for avg range on a full tank. I know several factors take into account, but I presume after filling a full tank it should be relatively equal amongst all of the impreza 2.0i? UNLESS, the computer calculates based on previous range/driving behavior prior to the fill to make the calculations on range when the car is refilled to the top.

A read in the manual doesnt say that it does calculate based on previous driving history/behavior, but just that it gives you a range on how many miles you can drive on the amount of gas in the tank. who knows, maybe ill just ask the dealer if it changes like that. its just weird going from 420-450 mi to 380 and yesterday after a fill it says only 340mi on a full tank. thats a huge jump.

i feel like my old 2000 Honda Accord V6 drove further on a full tank of gas (granted the gas tank was a lot bigger) still, this 4 cycl should smoke it in terms of milage especially since its CVT.

It does. This is easy to see. If you sit on the highway going 65 mph with cruise control on for a while, then fill up at a service station right on the highway, the trip computer will list your remaining range somewhere in the mid 5x0 miles range.

But if you pull of the highway, get dinner, then drive somewhere else to go shopping, then get gas, it will be down in the high 3xxs or low 4xx miles range for the range remaining on that tank.

I will say this again for those who missed. You do not have to change the rear diff fluids or any fluids for that matter before the interval specified by Subaru. You can however if you feel like it. Don't feel like you have to though.

With regards to the rear diff fluid, it will get dark and have a metallic look. This is completely normal and don't be alarmed. As stated above, you will see the same when you change out Amsoil fluids when the time comes.

I just want to say this since it seems like people are getting nervous about not changing the fluids. It is completely optional and there is nothing wrong with using the OEM fluids. It is at the discretion of the owner to put aftermarket fluids if he so chooses to do so. Nothing wrong with that, but it is not necessary!
