I read though all 3 pages and heard a couple people say that they broke there gears just accelerating in a particular gear. How and the hell does the gear rip apart while just driving??????


Also a lot of these types of threads I dont understand You have some people 02-07 who say they launch there cars all the time and bang gears as well and there trannys are fine with 100K mi Then you have others who say they baby there gears and they have 2nd or 3rd explode WTF is going on

Again, I believe (and my experience suggests) that it is high amounts of torque and the application of it that breaks/strips gears. If it comes on hard and fast those thin little gears can't take it, but they can take hard shifting and even some launching when the torque levels are lower....just my 2 cents...

Yeah, I have to question the consistancy of the quality control on these transmissions... Some folks are lucky, other's aren't. My original transmission had a bearing failure. I bought a used replacement '02 trans it lost 2 teeth off of second gear literally coasting into my driveway at <5mph, and 2nd gear still worked! But who knows how the previous owner treated it, probably was just a time bomb waiting to go off anyway, better in my driveway than having to get it towed from somewhere far away.

I think a lot of times there are small cracks that develop in the case hardened surface of the gear teeth during hard driving that then finally give up later on down the road, sometimes just cruising around.

Ummm...I don't know... Turbo'd 227hp at the crank, AWD...at a price point around 27K brand new (if I remember right)...when the 02's hit the streets, I don't think there was a cheaper car with that much power, let alone with AWD.

How do they do it? Cutting corners. It's a fact of life.

With that much power and a garbage tranny, what a deal they gave us And 27K isnt that cheap




There are so many other things that could have been made cheap, besides the transmission. Like cheaper materials for interior, 15in wheels, no radio. I would have rather had all that cheap stuff and had a gear box that was worth a damn. Instead they outsourced the transmission to Fisher Price

You and I, as car enthusiasts, would happily buy the car marketed with the strong gearbox and rugged racer's edge sans radio... The general public, however, would criticise the interior and crappy options (which rattles and squeeks bad enough as it is). These days, 27 grand will buy 1 of many available damned fast models from other makers, but you have to think about how the average power level of cars has come up in the past 6 years to meet people's need to match the jones's more powerful car... in late 2001, a fairly light AWD car with a 227hp turbo power plant was a force to be reckoned with.

It only took them 6+ years to figure out that they should put the non-RA STi/LGT gearset in the USDM WRX... It's not by any means a world of difference in stregnth, but I've been scratching my head for a couple of years wondering why they insisted on using a weaker gearset with terribly matched ratios when the USDM LGT transmission was already sitting in the parts bin for more than a decade.

mine blew...with a vf39 swap...i didnt even slam 2nd its not an IF its WHEN so just think about that i now have an STI V4 tranny

Isn't taking any chances... am saving my $$$$ for a 6 spd swap... at least then, if I miss a shift, it will forgive me somewhat.. can go foot-through-the-floor at 350 whp, and still have it hold together

^the smart thing to do. I just don't understand why people chance it so much with setups making good power. or at least when people make good power and continue to thrash it.
I put my 6spd in the car before I destroyed my 5spd and it helped keep the cost down a lot. After selling my 5spd stuff I had a 6spd in the car for just over 1800. 8 months later I traded it back for a ppg box and let me tell you the car is much faster with the 5spd. I think the 2.5 guys are alright with the 6spd but I had a vf34 on a 2.0L with the 6spd and it just wasn't a very good match.

I'm at Romraider tuned Stg 2... TBE, TMIC, Prodrive CAI. I'm saving up for a 6 spd swap or PPG's. Haven't decided yet. 25,000 miles, been stg. 2 since 2,000 miles. No problems to report, except a intermittently squeaking throwout bearing since 7,500 miles.

I had a 2004 WRX, Cobb stg 2 for ~20,000 miles, no transmission problems at all...

Friend has a 2004 WRX, stg 2 for ~50,000+ miles, no transmission problems. (although there is a nasty squeal noise now and we think it's an exhaust gasket)

2004 18g 2.0L WRX wagon made 295Whp 274ft/lbs of torque on PIA's Mustang Dyno. 84,000 miles on the car and stock clutch still holding, car has been stage 2 since 15,000 miles and 18g was installed and tuned just recently. Tranny seems fine, I just shift it with a little more mechanical sympathy now

~500crank tq/hp hybrid PPG's 1-2 (blew up downshifting when 2.0L) stock 3-4-5 no probs just don't shift like a meatball.. and slip that clutch a lil, they're cheaper. didn't read whole thread but crank torque is what matters, not whp. my .02

Resurrected thread, but timely. I blew third on my modded '06 right about 100k, passing another car in 3rd. It was like this:

Passed in third when I should have used 2nd (low rpm high boost);

All of a sudden REV!!! WHIRR!!!

No more third.

02 Wrx, Cobb stage 2, around 110k miles. Last time I slammed 1-2, got stuck in 2nd and when I stopped at the light, it felt so weird. Use to launch the car and bang gears but after breaking a axle a few months ago, and the way this tranny acts up at times (when banging gears) and the "weak" part about it, I'm debating going for the 6 speed swap if I can get everything for a good price, or unless I just go for a 05 Sti if I can somehow afford it

I can tell you my 6-speed begs to be banged. So much faster and stronger shifting possible compared to my old 5-speed.

The 6-speed is a sadomasochist compared to the 5-speed missionary-position box.

Anyone at the 175k miles+ range? on OEM 02-03 WRX trans?
@ 270whp? +-10whp

So far my 1st gear is kinda hard to get into. Never bang gears & launch. I do, heel-toe as much as I can on off/on ramps.

2005 WRX wagon. 176k on my stock 5spd with a Clutchmasters FX300.

-300whp/300wtq (mustang dyno on e85)

My motor blew before anything in the tranny did. Motor was bone stock as well lol. Only issue I had outside of having to come to an almost complete stop to get into 1st, was rare 4th gear grind if I shifted very hard. Other than that I beat on it like there was no tomorrow.

Needless to say with the new turbo and motor getting installed, I am now running an 07 STI transmission along with some other things. I don't want anything else blowing up.

Im in the mid-300's with both HP and torque... Third gear was lost but now i have the Sti RA gearset to fix the problem! Same as Dave D... Low RPM then too much boost.

Im thinking that 300 is that magic number.
