1st gear is pretty big compared to the other gears in the box. It has to take alot of abuse, just to get the car moving...and therefor launching. I would not recommend launching on the stock box too often, otherwise, YES, something will break.

I am on my 2nd trans. I had a lightly modified 2.0 wrx, no problems at all. probably 230 whp. When to 2.5 with td04 (talk about torque) for 6 months, no problems. Went to vf22 and 2.5. Blew up tranny 4 months later. Rebuilt trans. Continued to run vf22 for 5 months, went back to td04, upgrade to a 20g 1 month later. Tranny lasted 2 months.

I dont slam my gears but they are constantly being pounded with over 300 whp.

I lost 3, 4, and 5, 2 weekends ago.

Do not drop the clutch, do not launch your car, perform smooth engagements w/ the clutch when performing spirited driving. Treat your car like how you want to be treated. You don't want someone breathing down your neck and telling you to run a marathon while kicking you in the ass (ie. Ripping thru the gears and launching car)

autox monthly..spirited driving..
and daily driver..

I have been running 310whp/330wtq on an 18g'd 06 WRX for over 20k now and have had no issues. I am getting ready to start running alky and will be pushing higher numbers.

As most people have said, it is all in how you drive it, and how hard you are willing to push it...

You should be fine under 300whp, when you start getting over 300 is when the risk factor rises signifgantly.

When you break 350wtq/whp is when it becomes more of a when and not a IF.

My tranny lasted ~3 months on a clipped td06H-20g running a tial 44mm external, never 1 launch, no racing, no hard shifts, absolutely no abuse and original clutch was holding strong. Broke 3rd casually passing someone on the way to work.

I previously ran a VF making over 350wtq for the previous year.

Mine broke at 35,000. Breaking in my 6spd now and never looking back.

I will be heading for 300awhp soon but first I'm throwin in a set of micropolished RA's while my stock set is still worth something. You should be fine as long as you don't abuse it. I'm just being proactive, and would rather have RA ratios. good luck

Tranny is fine after an evening of abuse down the 1/4 mile. Clutch started to let go on the 23 psi map.

PPG's now with a ton of 6k clutch dumps.

Default Its torque

Below you will see what happens when you try to send 350wtq through an 02 tranny! When I pulled the plug to drain the fluid there as quite a "gritty" bunch of sludge.I NEVER bang gears and I mean it, never. This was a second gear rolling of the throttle not a shift, but the vf34 makes 350wtq at $4k and when that kicks in on a cold winters day, it's more than an 02 tranny can take. Oh, only 280whp btw.

I finally got the tranny out and got to take a look at the second gear gone!

and if you look closely at this picture you'll see all the gears that were stripped and laying in the pan of the tranny case

i have a 2.5 shorty in my car using the td04, torque is crazy fun!! still on my stock tranny, but i already feel the new block killing it. hahaha. i drive like my grandma now so it will last me long enough to save up for a 6mt, after that i'll never have to worry about the tranny again. oh and dccd will be nice, especially with the 04-05 transmissions.

300+ whp but more importantly, 300+ wtq for over 35k mi. on a stock 02 tranny. Like most others have said, drive without banging gears and launch properly if you want to launch, and your tranny should last you a while.

Ah, that's part of the combo anyway, the signature colour heh

The only people who get 5spd trannies surviving at A TRUE 300whp (usually more like 350 nasioc whp ) are the ones who don't do much more then commute around town and do highway pulls
