Default Scariest Movie Ever?

I recently got the Nightmare on Elm Street DVD Box Set due to a mislabeling at a local Walmart for about 60 bucks. I bought it to wax nostaligic about how this scared the crap out of me when I was a wee-child. Well I finally got my wife to watch it, and she went on and on about how disappointing it was. Her: "I thought it was supposed to be scary!" Me: "It was... when it came out in 1984 and I was FIVE!" So now she is all huffing and puffing cause she wanted to be scared, and I can't decide what to add to my dvd collection to do the trick. It can be "boo" scary like a Friday the 13th or it can be a "mind frick" like The Shining. My mind, surprise surprise, keeps coming up blank. Blair Witch, Omen, Exorcist? What do each of you view as the scariest movie ever?

Not a scary movie, but the scaries moment: Kathie Bates in About Schmidt?

Sorry, she does not deserve that. She's a very talented actress.

No you're not. No movie has ever affected me like that movie did. That is truly the scariest movie I've ever seen, or probably ever will see.

I'll also vote for The Entity. Creeped me out at the end when you find out it was based on a true story & the ghost followed her.

The Ring - Not the american version. Watch the Japanese version. I don't speak Japanese but they have subtitle. When I watch it alone in my room, it scared the crap off me. The story line basically the same for both American & Japanese version but the sound effect and the actors are scarier on the Japanese version.

I watched the American version first, and then the Japanese version, and I found the *** version laughable. Not scary, and had crummy effects.

The Ring? Bah!

Fright Night scared the snot out of me when I was 6.

LXG was pretty scary. The acting scared me, that is.

I saw Resident Evil during the daytime in a dark theater and when I walked outside, I got pretty freaked.

Well, of course we're no longer scared by movies like Nightmare, F13th, etc when we're adults. We know for-sure that the things depicted in those movies are impossible. Also, those movies relied very heavily on blood/gore/"jump-outs" to scare, rather than developing true fear/paranoia.

That said, I still love the original Halloween, and Amityville Horror and Ring or Changeling (thought I've not seen the latter two yet...oh, Hallowe'en's coming...moobie marathon at my place!) they scare me because even rational people can believe in that kind of thing (or, it's easier to not-disbelieve them than Freddie or Jason)

i was in complete agreement until i bought "the golden years". worst movie ever. i hated it enough to butcher it on imdb.com. i think it sucked so bad because a series was supposed to follow the 2+ hour movie and they left the end kind of open. storm of the century was a good movie though.

I third that. good call!

Very scary. Not in a slasher flick kind of way, but in a leaves you on the edge of your seat kind of way.

Also, I thought the original Terminator was scary as hell when it came out (I was 5). It gave me nightmares for months.

The Thing still wigs me out sometimes.. because of it's sci-fi nature.

Alien.

The Ring is definately creepy.

The Exorcist.

28 Days Later scared a lot of my female friends.

The Entity, The Omen.

I haven't seen The Changeling. I might have to go rent that now.

Poltergiest scared the effing living ****e out of me as a kid. The clown under the bed?? HELLO!

If you really watch Ringu it has so much more attention to detail. Like in the Ring when the TV turns itself on and it's all static and the girl shuts it off but it comes back on. In Ringu it's the baseball game they tried to record at the cabin.... little things like that that you have to watch out for make it better.
