Default Removing dash top and heater core ('07 STi)?

I need to modify the thin air duct feeding the heater core that runs directly behind the 2DIN space in the dash of my STi, and in order to do so, I need to remove the top of the dash to access the duct work.

I have the entire bottom portion of the dash removed (glove box and all), as well as everything that holds the A/C controls and head unit in place. I found two bolts between the door jam and the dash that seemed to hold it in place; I could wiggle any portion of the dash top with those bolts removed. However, I couldn't get it off, and I imagine that there are some other bolts and clips that hold it down.

Could someone let me know what else I need to liberate in order to get the dash board out so I can get to the heater core duct work? Thanks!

-Rich

Alright. I figured it out. Hopefully this will help someone else as I have not been successful in finding a walk through for this procedure for newer subarus (though I did find one for 90's imprezas, which was a help). First off, unhook the battery since you will be messing with the passenger airbag, and you don't want it exploding in your face.

Assuming you have already removed the glovebox, center console/AC controls & trim, and the bottom trim off of the dashboard surrounding the glovebox and steering wheel (that houses the OBDII port), the first thing to do is to remove every screw and bolt holding the dash top to the large metal support beam running across the cabin. Pop out the plastic tabs on the center console that are over top of the studs on the support beam, and push them to the sides.

Remove the gauge cluster (two screws hold it at the top, and a clear plastic clip that you have to press with two fingers at the bottom of the cluster holds the trim piece in, and the cluster comes out with three philips screws) and unplug everything from it. Unscrew the center vents (they are screwed at the bottom), remove, and unplug the hazard switch. Remove the metal trim underneath of the vents, held with three screws. Pop out the trim piece that holds the green clock (two clips in the front, pushed with a screw driver will get it out) and unplug the clock.

Remove the pillar trim pieces from the left and right sides of the windshield (you will need to pull back the rubber gasket holding them to the door, then pull at the top, and the clips should pop out). Remove the two 10mm bolts to the left and right of the dash with a socket wrench (you will need to have the doors open to access them).

With the pillar trim removed, begin to unclip the defroster diffuser (at the very front of the dash) by pulling on one side, then running a screw driver or other stiff metal piece between the dashboard and the trim piece, until it is unclipped.

I couldn't figure out how to unhook the little infra red sensor that is in the middle of this trim piece, and in my attempts to unclip it, the wires came off of the PCB attached to the back of the sensor. If this happens, make sure to mark which wire (red or black) went to the sensor so you can solder it back later. If you have more luck with this, please let me know how you got it unclipped.

There is a screw that holds all of the wiring for the instrument cluster and clock to the dash board; it is to the right of where the instrument cluster was, and has a vent attached directly behind it, negating the use of even a shorty screwdriver. Either use a 90 degree philips screw driver to remove the screw (if you can fit it), or use a hex philips bit and a pair of pliers to unscrew it as I did.

On to the passengers' side: remove the three 10 mm bolts holding the air bag to the metal crossmember with a socket wrench and extension. Remove the clip holding the airbag harness to the crossmember by sliding it towards the passenger's door. The airbag should now be dangling from the dash top by 10 hooks and plastic tabs.

Back to the top: remove the two 10 mm bolts holding the dashboard to the firewall at the left and right sides beneath the windshield. Using two 10" socket extensions will make this easier.

Hopefully, at this point, it should be liberated, except for the airbag which is held to the dashboard by 10 hooks into plastic tabs. Try moving the entire dashboard unit up and towards the back of the car. It should move as one piece, with the ducts to the side vents attached.

I'm stuck on getting the airbag free from the two rows of plastic tabs holding it to the dashboard, but hopefully I'll get it off momentarily (I had to take a break because I was going nuts trying to get it off).

Hopefully that will help someone! Thanks,

-Rich

Okay...just leave the air bag on the dash when you pull it out. The clip that holds the harness together is a little tricky, but comes apart easily once you figure it out.

This is f'n stupid...with the dash still in the car, you need to remove the 6 screws that hold the duct for the defroster (they are behind the dash, towards the front of the car) to get to the screw that holds the clip for the wire for the infra red sensor in place (there does seem to be no way to unclip the sensor, so you'll have to resolder it once you put the dash back together), then with the clip out, you can pull the wire through the duct work. Now, you should be liberated and the dash will slide right out.

Now, I have to pull apart the rest of the crap to get to the heater core duct work. This sucks.

Geez, no wonder I'd been unable to find a how-to for this.
