Default EJ20G rebuild?

Im looking at buying an EJ20G but it has 100K on it. If i buy it i would like to rebuild the motor (manly a complete reseal kit, rod barrings, MAYBE piston rings, spark plug wires and boots, etc.) no after market pistons or cams or anything just bringing back to newish condition. I was wondering how difficult it is to get these parts. Can i use a reseal kit from a USDM EJ205? rod barrings? etc?

Thanks
~Leor

you could, or you just just stuff a brand new ej257 shortblock on it- bigger, newer, and alot less time :P

ej20G does not have spark plugs, it has Coilpacks on plugs. gaskets and seals are standard subaru fare- not very hard to come by, just order for DOHC ej25 NA or ej205 at your dealer, depending on the part.

Thanks 2Litre... the ej257 short block will be to expensive and im not really worried about down time. Is there any where i can find part numbers for all parts i will need for the rebuild that are available at a local dealership?

Not worth it imo. My ej20g lost a cylinder recently and I ended up getting a v8 shortblock, used, and it came it to far cheaper than to rebuild.

from my experiences it shouldnt cost more then $250-300 for the rebuild (seals, gaskets, rings and rod bearings). That being said Ive never done it on a Subaru. Am I wrong here?

subaru short blocks are a PITA to rebuild. I would highly recomend getting a STi 2.5L short block. reason being, my friend made 50WHP more then i did at 3000RPM with settups not to different from myne.... they are a bit costly, but if i ever blow my bottom end i wouldnt even consider a 2.0 just for the simple fact that, there is no replacement for displacement.

Unless you are planning to push over 450WHP there is no point in putting in internals unless you wana change the compression ratio.

Again... would i like to put a new EJ257 short block in? Sure. Do I have the money? no. That means its not going to happen. Im not looking to make insane numbers here, Im looking for daily driver.

Ej20G rebuild kits cost an arm and a leg, and are hard to get becoue they usualy have to come from eather England or Japan. My friend noah got just a gasket set, and that cost him 400 if i remember correctly.

I got a ej20g rebuild kit (thanks rallispec...I think) and it was around $300. You have to get one from Japan - the other won't work because of the rocker covers and some other bits. If you are just looking to rebuild the shortblock than I believe you can use a regular ej207 kit (or just order the parts you need from within the kit).

Thanks kingsubi for the info. Now does the 5MT reseal kit for 93-03 cars work on this tranny too? And also someone was telling me i need new injectors to make the swap work for some reason or another, is this true?

5MT tranny design has never changed - so everything is the same. What does the reseal kit have in it?

New injectors? Depends what intake you are using.

p.s. if you want a ej20g block (although open) I have one assembled ready to go but you need to replace a rod bearing on it. Might save you some time.

Actually there have been a couple of changes over the years, but nothing major. From '99+ they no longer have that plate on the top of them. There's a couple of other little casting differences that I don't remember off the top of my head. But internally, they are pretty consistent...

Right forgot about that. They changed the center diff casing in 99. Also turbo and non-turbo trannies have a different clutch mechanism so the casing is actually different.
