throttle cable either needs grease or replacing. Probably the greasing as it may be just that the old grease needs a little bit of hot air to get it to be smooth again.

Good manual...Hayes or Chiltons is the usual pick; some people have the factory Subaru manuals on CD or downloaded online. I have the latter, it's pretty helpful.

I agree. before starting, stomp on the pedal a few times. does it loosen? I'd lube it and check for corrosion.

Phase II motors, external headgasket, but subaru makes all coolant changes be done to include their coolant conditioner (its $2 for one bottle, enough for the entire system, you can get it at the dealer if you're DIY'er or having your own mech do it for you). So far it seems to be working :crosses fingers:

Not safe, but a lot less likely to have a problem.

True, let me rephrase - safe for a while. My 00 RS external gaskets let go at 185k.

I'd check to see if the cable is bound up anywhere. Also, how is the action where it connects to the TB? There are springs there that could probably use a squirt of WD-40.
