Default 05' LGT trans swap - Speedo Gear Problem

I figured out why my 05' LGT tranny wouldn't turn so easy after puting back together. The plastic speedo gear was not meshing correctly with the worm drive on the tranny. I pulled the trans back apart and pulled the gear off and put the case halves back together and it turned easy. I don't know why it wasn't meshing correctly. I used the part number confirmed by a couple people that have done the swap. Well at least I know what it is now and just need to figure it out. I wonder if it just didn't line up in the grooves when putting it together, because it did have a spot where the plastic teeth were smashed down. What I don't get is how it was still hard to turn even when the good teeth on the plastic gear were in contact. I could feel it bind just a little when it would go through the smashed couple teeth, but it was still stiff the whole time

This is how I put the assembly together: I put the upper snap ring on the shaft, slid the washer under that and slid the shaft into the tranny, so the washer comes in contact with the tranny case and the snap ring rides on the washer, then I put the gear on the bottom and put the lower snap ring on to hold the gear on, then slid the oil seal over the top of the shaft from the outside of the tranny. Did I do it wrong, so the shaft is not at the right height and the gear is not riding in the right spot causing it to bind?

Part numbers I used from searching threads:

Shaft = 32713AA002
washer = 803012060
upper snap ring = 805012020
lower snap ring = 031512000
Gear = 32714AA230
Seal = 806712100

Let me know what you think

Thanks

update: I ended up buying another speedo gear from subaru and had the wife turn the input shaft while I slowly tapped the case halves together so if the teeth were not perfectly lined up, they would line up before it was down all the way. It worked and the tranny was installed and the speedo was working and accurate. The tranny shifted nice and smooth and I loved the gear ratios way better than the wrx box.

Fast forward about 6K miles: I go to leave for work in the morning and my speedo is not working at all, it worked fine on the way home the day before. I get some Vehicle speed sensor codes thrown and it is running in safe mode and won't rev over 4k. I suspect the speed sensor went out so I took it out to test it, and decided to run the car in gear with the wheels off the ground to make sure the shaft is spinning, and it's not I pushed on it a little with my finger and it started to spin, and then it stopped again.

So the tranny has to come out, but it isn't all that bad since I figure this is a good time to do the 04' wrx swap with the built motor and DOM 2.5R I have been planning.

I'm just wondering what went wrong. I used the part numbers from a reputible source and other people have used this same speedo gear. I will find out what's wrong when I take the tranny back apart, but wondered if anybody has run into any problems adding this speedo gear assembly to their LGT tranny?

I will buy another gear, but don't want to have to pull the tranny again after 6k miles.

Any tips from Tranny experts/builders?

There has to be a reason the gear ate itself over time. I'm wondering if there is a better one to use than the one I used.

Anybody?

well I did some more research and talked to illnastyimpreza who is running this tranny and he used the old speedo gear out of his 98' impreza tranny. He has had no problems after 20K miles. I looked up the part number on that on and it's 32714AA190 and was a wopping $60, where the 32714AA230 was $12 and from a 04' forrester with the 4.11 ratio.

I want to buy the 98' impreza one to compare, but that is a steep price tag. I wonder if there is a difference, or if any speedo gear from a 4.11 tranny will work. I used the one I did from reading a a post from a vendor on here that had done the swap.

Update: I pulled the motor and tranny out today and got the trans apart to look at the speedo gear. It was all chewed up. I really don't think it's the right gear.

Part number used: 32714AA230 - I looked it up and it says it's from an 04' forester with a 4:11 final drive, but it's obviously not working since I tried two and they both didn't mesh well.

People that have done this successfully used the gear from their 98' or 99' impreza and have had no issues. The part number I got was from Bobby at PRE in portland and it worked for him, so I thought it was a reputible source.

I guess I will just drop the $60 on a gear for a 98' impreza and see how it goes together.

Any tranny guys have any suggestions?

I feel bad that you've been talking to yourself for the past year and commend you for still posting updates. Anyways, I'd contact the knowledgeable folks at either DS1 Motorsports or Andrewtech to see if they can point you in the right direction.

Yeah, I was feeling no love on this thread, but was still trying to figure out a solution and post up my findings to help someone else avoid this.

Foolio (Jodie at Rallispec.com) is hooking me up with the right gear. He said you would run into this same problem with an RA gear set. They have these metal speedo gears (bronze I'm assuming) custom made for them out of japan. They use them on the RA gear sets and LGT gear sets and they work. I tried DS1 and Andrewtech with no luck. DS1 replied to my PM to call and I did, but Dylan was unavailable both times I called. Andrewtech never responded. Not bashing either of those great vendors, and I don't blame them. People are busy and it's not like a huge sale anyway. So, props to Rallispec for reading my thread and seeking me out with a solution!!!!!!

What I don't get are the guys that say they have had no problems with the gear out of their 98' or 99' Impreza. Those list for $73 and you can get them online for $60, but the metal gear was only a little more at $95. I figure I would rather pay a little extra instead of chancing another plastic gear and be pulling the tranny again in 6k miles. I know a plastic gear should last forever if it is correct, but the metal one just seems to be a better bet. PPG also makes Bronze speedo gears, so they must have seen a reason for the upgrade.

I will updtae this after I get it installed. Thanks again Jodie at Rallispec!!!!!!

IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just put it on and put the case halves together and the input shaft turns smooth like butter with no drag or tension whatsoever. And the shaft that drives the speed sensor is turning like it should.

THANK YOU JODIE @ RALLISPEC!

^^^ Yes that is how I had it before and how it is now. The only difference now is the new gear. I didn't even take the assembly apart, I just took the lower snap ring off, slid the old gear off, put the new gear on and re-installed the snap ring and it works like a charm.

I would use the gear from the Impreza that has been proven to work which is 32714AA190.

There are a couple guys in this thread that have used it and have not had any issues for thousands of miles. This will cost you about $60 or you can get the custom metal gear from rallispec for $90.

I would to add that I had both gears side to side (I have a pic somewhere but I can't seem to find it) one of them has 28 teeth, the other has 30 teeth (30 is the correct number).

32714AA190. The more expensive one. I think the speedo is correct, I installed it then drove it out 2000miles to Ohio a few days afterwards and haven't driven it in 4weeks so I can't say for 100%.

All the factory gears are plastic and they will last longer than your tranny. The only reason it wouldn't last is if it's the incorrect tooth profile, but the one you ordered is correct and has lasted over 20k miles and counting on one transmission for sure. If you wanted a metal one, you should've ordered the custom gear from Rallispec. I'm sure you will be fine.
