pull the code. i think autozone / pep boys do this for free!!
if not you can by a crap scanner that just gives you the code for 20 bucks, then just google the code or post it here. Also check your wire's? they make tests for these. A compression test will tell if its the engine itself or something else. The injectors might be dirty, the gas might be bad. Reset the ECU also.

Clearing a CEL on an OBDII vehicle isn't the whole issue. Once that's been done, what you've more or less done is hit the reset button. The car needs to relearn alot of things, like basically what to expect with your driving habits. The computer looks at each systems monitor (drive cycle monitor, readiness moniter, yadda yadda) and checks out if everything involved with that system is normal. Now the trick is, there are some interesting criteria for the computer to even run a test on a given system. For example, for the computer to test the EGR monitor, the car must be travelling at ~60 and decelerate to ~30 WITHOUT downshifting or braking. O2 monitors are run 5 minutes after the car is shut off IF the driving that preceded the shutoff met it's own criteria.
That's why some people bitch about how it can take forever for a car to be inspected, because sometimes you have to jump through alot of hoops to have the computer merely run each test. Oh, and if the CEL is blinking, for the love of god pull over and shut the car down as safely and quickly as possible. It takes alot to make that thing blink. It's kinda like the oil pressure warning light, when it goes on at like 4 psi. By the time you see it, it's kinda too late to avoid some harm. |

sometimes, if i take right off in my 98 impreza 2.2 without letting it warm up, and then try to accelerate quickly from a stop, the same thing happens; blinking light and gutless sputtering. however, if i just let off the gas a little, it will drive normally. after about a minute of the motor running, the car drives normally regardless of how i drive it. im ashamed to say ive never taken the time to check the code, and the girl could really use a tune-up.

MAP sensor and O2 Sensor errors.
If either one of those is malfunctioning, there's a decent chance the other one will look like it's malfunctioning due to how the ECU calculates fueling in your car. The ECU won't know which one to believe. Replace the O2 sensor and see if the problem goes away. If the problem continues, replace the MAP sensor. |
