Default HELP! This muffler is OBNOXIOUSLY loud... (albeit sexy)

I just had this twin tip Magnaflow muffler installed, and much to my disappointment, 220 bucks later it is extremely loud at all times except low rpm cruise and idle. You guys should hear this thing on decel!

(01 GC8 Sedan, bone stock)

So... option #1 is to throw this thing in the ****pile and get myself another stock axleback... even the exhaust shield rattle was more tolerable than this sound. But I LOVE the way it looks

Option #2: weld in some huge resonator in attempts to shut it up. I guess I was used to the deep mellow tone my STi had... what do you guys recommend? I'm thinking maybe a 24" resonator, but I don't know of any good brands.

i think you can buy a silencer thing that goes in the muffler itself for pretty cheap

you honestly think that's loud? even if it isn't just an axel back, and a catback, IMO it's not loud at all. Try a stromung muffler

The stock is just a huge cork in the system and it just feels like its choking the car besides the fact that its damn near silent

I honestly think this muffler is the loudest thing I've ever put on a car. It's right up there with how my STi sounded with the axleback unbolted from the midpipe. It resonates inside the cabin something fierce! It sounds awesome at idle, and its OK when I cruise at about 22-2500 RPMS, but believe me: it gets wicked loud, which I never would have expected from this muffler. I've had a Magnaflow on another car, and it sounded nice and mellow (H23 prelude). Who knows...

Yeah I feel the same way about my Magnaflow. It's pretty damn loud. My friend said he heard me coming 2 blocks away. And this was in a busy part of San Francisco. I think I'll be going with a different muffler system pretty soon. Anyone have a good recommendation? how's the Cobb exhaust. I thought it used to be a Stromung, is it still?

cheers

i'd weld in a resonator. your cats are not hollowed out or replaced by a "track pipe"...correct ?

stock cats, untouched. Have you used resonators? What brand/size? I'm thinking the longer they are, the quieter they must be.

2 blocks isn't that bad. When I had a high flow cat my car was audible from about a mile away.

Check out TWE, they have midpipes with resonators already welded in.

I love my magnaflow with 2.25"cat back . abit nosiy at idle, low cruise speeds. Although very quiet at highway cruising, deceleration. The wife hasn't complained but once when I first got it........can't be that loud......when Paul Eklund buzzes my place with his rally car holy****!!!!!!!! DAMN now that's loud! 3" straight pipe race motor!

I had TWE headers, high cat 2.5" pipe out to a Borla muffler. That was loud. But the car drove awesome. No throttle effort needed at all. Hard to explain.

Then I added a magna flow muffler to the mid pipe. That fixed the noise but I had no ground clearence. So I sold the Borla, moved the Magna Flow to the back (Kind of ugly) and had two resonators (2.5" x 12" and 2.5" x 18") installed. Worked great. Nice while cruising. Scary when WOT

Remember the Turbo of your old STI killed the harshness of the engine noise. Our engines are just raw.

Shawnrs

ps did you notice you fuel milage dropped when you put the ehaust on your car, or it just my car? My car now has the stock y-pipe and cats. JUs the 2.5" out the Magna Flow (as listed above). My milage has not returned. : (

ShawnRS- Try clearing the ECU codes, and relearning the idle. If you don't have a scanner, you can either go to a parts store (autozone) or the dealer, if they'll do that for you as a courtesy. You just need to clear the ECU memory, and let the car idle for about 5 minutes. Then, turn the a/c on for one minute, then shut the a/c off, let it run for 1 more minute. Shut off and restart, then drive it. See if that helps.

I had a WRX the other day that would stall when releasing the clutch on turns at low speeds... it turned out to be a tight cruise throttle cable. Even after I corrected that, it would stall. Clearing codes didn't help either. Only after I cleared memory AND did the idle relearn, did the stalling problem go away. That idle relearn procedure does a lot for these cars...

<---also have a magnaflow 2-tip on 2.5" catback. The pipe bender who installed it did a really nice job of getting it tucked in the small area behind the rear axle and the bumper (it IS quite a lengthy muffler)

stock header etc...

When I first put it on, I almost had some buyers remose it was so loud....mainly because I don't want to be "that guy" at the local auto-xes with the stupid loud stock RS that sounds more like an exhaust leak...

..after about a year now, it had quieted down significantly, and I've actually gotten used to the sound.

yes, mileage went down and I also notice wild "mood" swings from one day to the next as far as driveability and feel; mostly dependent on the weather...

overall I am happy... I wouldn't like my car nearly as much back with the old stock quietness...

I had a Magnaflow "resonator" welded into my ApexI N1. It sounds much better with it in. Not so loud at all. I dont even use the muffler insert thing anymore. The resonator I used is just another muffler. Its like 18" long and about 4-5" in diameter. Cost me like $60 plus some labor.
