IPS Motorsports Dyno Day (5/23/09)
Its about damn time I dynoed it! Always been shooting for 300awhp on a VF34, stock EJ205 block and internals, 90K miles, etc. Never thought I'd actually hit it (if people asked, I'd just estimate ~275awhp), but I guess my goal actually hit the nail right on the head! I'll start you off with a dyno chart:
The runs on the chart are out of order--1st run, 3rd run, 2nd run. The first run, I ran in 3rd gear with the cutout closed. For the second run, I figured I'd try 4th gear since the MFactory ratios are so similar to those of a 6-speed. That didn't turn out too well. For the 3rd and awesomest run, I dropped it back to 3rd gear again and opened the cutout. Just by opening the cutout, I gained 10awhp/8awtq! I always thought it was just the butt dyno getting a kick out of the extra noise. Enough talk, now for some videos! First run: Second run: Third run (once again proving the mic on my camera sucks): THATS WHATS UP (Mods include: VF34@~20-21psi, '06 WRX (560cc) injectors, STi TMIC, Walbro 255, IAG 38mm EWG kit, SPT short ram, MFactory gears, and some other stuff.)

Thanks dude! Jan at Speed Industry brought up putting my car on his dyno (Mustang Dyno), which would inherently return significantly lower, more "realistic" numbers, but I'm not sure if he was serious or not.
Until then, I'm perfectly fine in my Dynojet bubble. |

I dynoed my lgt there a few years ago. I did 263/290 on stock vf40(107 traps). I want to see what my forester puts down there(275/270 on PnL dyno)

Dyno numbers are good to give you a rough idea of what sort of power your engine is making and, of course, as a tuning tool.
What really matters though is what power (torque) your car is putting to the ground, as a dyno is not calibrated to measure that (dynos are calibrated to show a 1:1 ratio). You actually make 22% more torque in 3rd gear and 27% more torque in 4th gear (throughout the full rev range, not just peak), than if you were using your stock transmission. To put this into perspective, the 279lbft peak you are making on your car just now is equal to a car that is making 354lbft peak that is running on a stock transmission. Just some food for thought, as not everyone understands the torque multiplication aspect of changing your gears |

Thanks for the heads up!
Judging by the approximate peak of that 279ft-lb run (maxes out around 5252 RPM) and your 354wtq estimate, I'd be making about 354awhp per stock transmission....woah. Even on a Dynojet, thats a solid number. |

Gearing/Torque Multiplication only changes the torque produced to the ground. It does not affect your horsepower (which is an engine measurement). Your would still be making 300whp.

Interesting. If horsepower is derived from torque, how can torque change while horsepower stays the same? (Not trying to argue, just curious.)

Engine torque doesn't change. It is the torque that is put to the ground that changes. Your transmission is basically a torque converter.
You're engine is making 279lbft peak just now. On assumption that you are running a 3.9 Final Drive, you would actually be putting down 1347lbft peak to the ground. i.e 1.238 (4th) x 3.9 (FD) x 279lbft = 1347lbft to the ground. 0.972 (stock 4th) x 3.9 (FD) x 354lbft = 1341lbft to the ground. Put it this way, a stock WRX only has 217lbft engine torque. If the engine to ground ratio was only 1:1 (as a dyno will show), you could have several friends push your car faster than the car could accelerate. |

I could definitely feel it too. The car felt way crazier with the 5-speed. Quote:
Nice graph too. |
