I've seen similar issues with those lights coming on, for me it has been that I didn't correctly reconnect the MAF sensor. I just unplug and plug back in, problem solved.
Just a tidbit so you don't have to take the whole thing off in the future. |

Phew. I read through all 64 pages. Don't I get a medal or something?
Since the world revolves around me (not really; just ask my wife), I thought I'd post a quick synopsis of what I've taken from this informative thread. I apologize if this is an obvious rehash, but typing it out makes it make sense in my head. Besides, if it's incorrect, I bet somebody will correct me : 1. My 2006 Baja has a MAF, since it has an '05 or later EJ25. Therefore, it's intake suffers from the same resonance as every other MAF based 2.5L engine (and maybe MAF-based EJ22s, depending on reports). 2. I cannot replicate the symptoms with a purely stock system, since the snorkus is defeating the intake resonance, as the Subaru engineers designed it to. I mash the throttle at low RPMs while the engine's in a low RPM range, the resonance is cancelled, the MAF does it's job without getting all wonky, and my engine/cat is happy. 3. Should I decide I need a few extra HP on the top end (which I most likely won't directly notice, but since I've put a few bucks into the modification, I'll tell everyone that I can tell the difference), I can go with the hybrid intake. It provides better air flow while retaining the effects of the snorkus, thereby maintaining a happy engine & cat. |

Yup, that's pretty much the summation from the first post. The middle 1,577 posts basically were just people going "I CAN HAZ SPECIAL PHYZICS BECAUSE RACECAR!".

Hello all, I'm new to NASIOC. Anyways, thank you williaty for your tests and insight, but I have a question. The pictures for the cosmo cai installed on a 2007 2.5i seems like it will fit with either just one cut or no cuts and it also looks like it comes with a hump coupler too. Will I be able to just use this and a hacksaw to make my hybrid intake? (Note: I ordered the intake before I read this sticky )

I think several people on here have turned the Cosmo CAI into the hybrid intake, so you should be good there. Not sure about the couplers but you'll soon work out if you need another when you get it.

That's cheap. So all I do is make it fit, attach the tubing to the throttle body and maf sensor and then attach the other connectors? What are those other connectors for anyways? Sorry, I'm new to cars.

Could the hybrid be the reason my head gasket just blew on an 07 with 87500kms?

The fact that you own a Subaru is why your headgasket let go with so little mileage on it.

Just installed the hybrid intake yesterday. Took a while to make it fit but its well worth it. I definitely feel better acceleration. There is no noise difference.

Tech's a ****ing idiot. The gaskets in an 07 aren't ringed. The 06 and 07 years are actually having the earliest HG failures I've ever seen out of any Subaru.

Aww man. I thought he was cool. I used to apprentice so I know when someone's trying to bull**** me. I just don't know anything about subie gaskets.
So. I'm reverting my intake back ( will be interesting to compare again) and hopefully the oil change I did a little while ago should t affect my ability to have it fixed user warrantee So if the intake makes it lean out at higher rpm and im not seeing any changes in engine temp, doesn't that mean the hybrid didn't cause the failure? |

You'll never see any changes in engine temperature because the stock water temp gauge basically does nothing.
The hybrid didn't cause the failure because an intake CAN'T cause the failure. |

intakes
I'm a bit confused (ADHD, sorry =p ). I only made it though about 3 pages or so before the thread got so far beyond topic into other details that I just couldnt stand to read it anymore(64 pages? 0_0 ). so if somebody could make straight-to-the-point sense out of this I'd really appreciate it.
My first Impreza was a 1993 1.8 auto. I took out the stock airbox & pipe but left the snorkus box in the fender well because i couldnt get it out anyway. I installed an AEM knockoff intake from eBay (typical setup - pipe, double cone (W) filter, silicone lines & couplers, MAF adapter plate). I LOVED that loud intake sound, especially since it was controllable - it was only loud when I really wanted it to be. I'm no sunday driver, I know how to really enjoy a subaru. And I wasn't worried about gas mileage, because a 4 cylinder car is only going to burn so much - I was getting about 18-20mpg whether I was haulin @$$ or sippin gas, didnt matter either way. It eventuallly got old & slow (just shy of 200kmi). That car rotted out real bad from northeast PA road salt & I got rid of it. NOW I've got a 97 impreza wagon 2.2 5 speed. I haven't changed anything on it yet besides a new water pump & timing belt, & dropping a fram air filter in the box. It needs a new exhaust, the mid pipe is just resting in the hollow muffler can & i slid the tail pipe right out leaving just the hole. Sounds like a diesel truck lol It seems it's not worth doing anything for performance because it has single port heads & i cant find hardly anything for it outside of generic bolt-ons (not that I know where to look for old car goodies, besides eBay & Andy's Auto Sport). Sure, I'd like it to be a quick car. I'd love to be able to raise hell on the back roads & powerslide etc, but I'm not prepared to spend $1500 on another motor etc right now. I'm no tuner & I don't race - I just love nice Imprezas. Im thinking my best bet with this car is to focus on sound & style while saving up towards another car with some 2.5 power. But back on topic... in my case, having a 97 ej22, is it really going to hurt anything besides gas mileage by having a full cold air intake instead of a hybrid setup? and does it make a difference whether I use a solid aluminum pipe vs a flex pipe like Spectre's memory position air ducting? Any other suggestions about easy ways to squeeze the good stuff out of a 2.2? Thanks in advance for the (appropriate) replies, I do appreciate it. -Snow- Last edited by SnowWolfJones; 05-02-2012 at 10:11 AM. Reason: spelling edit |

Long story short, no. It does not just hurt fuel mileage. I'm not versed enough in engine management to tell you what all will be hurt, but when the MAF spikes it dumps fuel or cuts fuel, leading to extreme rich or lean conditions. I'm sure Williaty will be back in here soon. |
