Need help regarding stupid ass tickets 604
Went cruising with some friends at Iona near the airport. We weren't going that fast, maybe 70km/h only. Out of nowhere, a car (police cruiser) flicks on the lights and drives out from the bushes and if I was really speeding, I'd have to some high speed evasive manuevering (hehe...driving school helped!) Anyway, I pull over, and the cop asks me what the speed limit is. "To be honest sir, I have no clue as there aren't any signs on this road" He then proceeds to "inspect" my car, asking me where my amber corners were, headlights, reverse lights, etc... Anyway, I basically ended up with two tickets. One with two fines on it for having an "outlet opened or widened" (exhaust...lol) for $86 and "other than red (rear)/amber (front)" for $86 as well. The other ticket is a notice and order to have my vehicle inspected.
Now, I know that I can dispute the ticket with the fines on it, as I have explained nicely to the officer that my corners are factory Subaru parts (which he claims isn't), mind you, they're WRX parts But they don't know that. And as for the exhaust, I'm sure there isn't a law that prohibits you from "opening or widening the outlet", whatever that means. I'm concerned with the vehicle inspection ticket. He did not say what was to be inspected, etc...so I have no clue what to expect, and if I should go back to all stock parts (which is a pain in the ass). Anyone been through this ish before? Now I know there's another thread bout the pedals, but the pedals I would just dispute, how would one go about with a vehicle inspection? |

Sad news, feel for ya
I won't start bitchin about the cops doing something useful for a change but it does seem like they're making these charges up. Fight it. They let a shop sell the stuff, take your taxes when you buy it, fine you for using it, make you have it inspected (which you're probably going to have to pay for) and then they'll insist you take it all off and have it inpsected again! |

Keiho: don't worry man...urs is not that worst that everything has to go back to stock...all u need to do is bring it to a authorized inspection facility and they will do a check up on ur car...truly ur car isn't too low, no huge body kit that is too close to the ground, no fraking loud exhaust, and since he was charging u for the signal and as long as u have a amber bulb u will pass the test easily...or can even pass w/o changing the bulb too...not like others they have to pay more to the inspector and let him just sign the paperwork...that will cost as much as $100sth to $200....

If I were you, look into the highway safety act in your province. I'm sure there is something there pertaining to exhaust. I don't think the tip is a legal issue. As for the clear corners, the facory is amber so just put amber bulbs in.

Too bad to know that. These cops in Richmond must have nothing else to do while there is a second murder case in this week in Surrey. I know there are many good cops in Vancouver, but these couple %^!$@#^ are just pissing me off.

What a waste of taxpayers money. Shouldn't they be out fighting real crime instead of harassing someone for aftermarket parts on their cars? One question I have though. I have the U.S./WRX bumper on my car. Just wondering if they would notice and then harass me about it if I ever got pulled over?

No need to be worry,
a friend of mine who drive a prelude speeding on cambie, and got pull over, He was also asked for car inspection too. Guess what, he brought his car to his speed shop and got inspected, and the guy in that speed shop gave him a sticker to put it on the windshield, that's it!!!! |

the losers in Richmond are paid by ICBC to do the the road block, I believe!
Peter, the only thing is we need to have a speed shop that was authorized to do inspection to be our sponsor, keke! Once we got the inspection request ticket, we HAVE to send to inspect, and then the shop will send the report to whoever need that to not harrassing us for, touch wood, a year. Duplicate that sticker not really work!! |

How do you find out where to get an inspection and how do you know if they even know anything about our cars (like the clear lights)?
Are they just doing standard inspections/ Would a US bumper pass if it was bolted on ok? Anyone have a link to where all the standards and rules are ? Will my 22B adjustable spoiler get me a ticket ? who knows ? |

I've tried looking into the motor vehicle act regulations online, but no luck. I guess if we want to read up on it we'll have to go to the library.
But anyway, you guys think I should put back my stock corners and turn signals and what nots? (I'm too lazy to jack up my car and change the muffler myself...so...) |

I think you should just make sure you have yellow bulbs in. There are other cars out there (stock) with clear rears and yellow bulbs. The question is are you getting a ticket because...
1. You modified the car from factory standard 2. Your indicators do not flash yellow 3. You have clear lenses |

Well, for my exhaust he just said "outlet widened or opened". What does that mean? ??? No clue there.
As for the corners, they are clear (WRX spec), but he didn't mention anything about the lights themselves. I think he thought that my corners were also the turn signals? |

It should'nt matter thet you have clear lenses, as long as you have amber bulbs. The new Hondas and VW's come stock with clear everything.

I don't think there is any speed shop that can do inspection themselves....but they usually hook up w/ one coz their cars got pull over easier than any others on the road....
for normal ppl inspection will usually cost from $45 to $75 at any inspection facilities...but for those speedshop u are looking for about $180 or $200...and basically they just sign it and u will be pass (for Keiho's case) unless ur car is too much over above the law...it could be sth else.... moreover i think keiho u can do inspection at any shop...don't think our shop or any others will give u a hard time....most likely u just pay them to "remove" the muffler and put the stock one back in (but actually they don't really do it...u just have to pay for it)...that's it...lights should be fine or else installing amber bulbs won't take u too long.... |

I really would hate defending cops...but recently Ive been reading more and more posts about how cops are such aholes.
Cant really blame the cops for this one or any of the recent "crack downs" on modified cars. Blame the illegal racers. Its all public backlash from the guy that got killed by racers on Knight. And not many people know this one but the bike cop that got killed in Delta a few months ago? was killed chasing cars at a race. Its what the general (not us) public/politicians wants the cops to do. And remember seeing A&J on the news on BCTV?, with the tapes of the races? the public was furious to see that kind of "racing" happening on public streets. I think it will all go away in a couple of months. I asked a few cops before what I can legally do to my car. 'Nothing' was their reply. Changing any parts around from factory standards is a no-no.. Basically any racing modification is illegal. Its just up to them how far they want to enforce it. I know clear lenses, widened exhausts , tinted glass.. or whatever else you might have is not dangerous whatsoever, and most of us here are not stupid enough to go 200+ klicks down a uncontrolled street. We are car enthusiasts who love our rides. But, they public/police dont know that. How can you expect them to know you are not a racer. The public view nowadays is that all of us with modded cars are racers. And the police have to do something about it.. true some cops are aholes, but some are really cool about it. I guess Ive been lucky, Ive been pulled over twice the last 2 weeks, so have a bunch of my friends. I asked one why such a hassle lately. He told me the #1 factor was the Knight street incident. Later guys. - got kind of carried away with this post. So it might not make sense. |

If the cops were smart they would allow a place from street racers to go.
or at least have some sort of sanctioned events somewhere.. like they do in San Diego. for 1 thing.. ppl that go to illegal drags dont kill ppl. ppl that do 200k on knight street do. the whole point of illegal night drags is to do it in a safe and controlled environment. like a deserted industrial road. Im not saying its a good thing to race on street period.. but if your gonna do it.. why not do it in a controlled situation like a night drag.. instead of on the street where there are other cars going by and pedestrians walking... |

So does anyone have a definite answer from the Motor Vehicle Act regarding modifications to the car?
Think about it, the rather draconian regulations regarding car mods in California. They are allowed legally to change their exhaust systems as long as it doesn't pass a certain decibel level, along with some other stuff. And you're telling me that Vancouver doesn't allow ANY aftermarket exhaust systems? Then what about all the Cdn Tire, Midas, etc..mufflers? Just trying to get a feel for what is the allowed mods here...not picking on the cops...I KNOW there are nice cops out there. But I'd also like to say that I've seen the same cop who almost rammed my car last night, and he's a total prick. PERIOD. |

"...without an operational need to do so [police speeding], it is wrong. [report using] Either the license plate number or the unit number which is often displayed should be enough to complain. Also, since there are so few police vehicles working at one time, just the date, place, direction of travel, vehicle type and time may be enough."
This was taken from the ICBC forum. [http://www.icbc.bc.ca/forum/showmsg.cgi?forum=default&msg=0863-0000&options=tm,nm&sort=1] This is just regarding speeding, but police do bend/break the law too, so REPORT THEM! Perhaps we should all carry a copy of the motor vehicle act (they should be free from the government as our taxes pay for them) or atleast a point form list of things to do when being hastled by unfair cops. If you appear organized and know what you are talking about, then they have only they power the law grants them and NO MORE! PS. I just got a MOMO shift knob, I wonder if that's illegal? Ashton, your shift knob probably is illegal, cause it isn't a factory Subaru part. LOL...
