Default Built a mount for an Escort - no suction cups to come off

I finally got sick enough of the suction cups on my Escort mount coming off to do something, so I cobbled together this mount. It's solid, yet it's easy on/easy off (no need to take it out once it's in, though).

The key is the rounded, hollowed edge of the headliner. There's nothing under it except a half-round space, so the heart of the mount is a 3/4" half-round that goes under there perfectly. The steel part of the Escort mount is attached to the plate with 2 #8 machine screws, and the lower corners have rubber feet against the glass. The plate has an extra strip glued across it where the screws go through, both to move the detector down a hair, and to increase the plate thickness to take the countersinks for the screw heads. Fine tuning of position/angle was achieved by moving the steel mount around (there's a little wiggle room if you locate the screws right where the centers of the suction cups would be) and by bending it. The whole process took about 2 hours.

Parts list:

.118" smoked acrylic sheet (McMaster-Carr part no. 8505K112)
3/4" acrylic half round (M-C part 3135T12) (only comes in 6' length)
Rubber feet (M-C 1670K2) (only come in a pack of 100)
2 - #8-32 x 1/2" machine screws with flat washer and locknut
Super glue

Nice job. My 9500i kept falling down so I had to rig something to keep it up, but it was by no means a nice as this. I may look into building one.

That is very creative and well executed!

Though with the length that the half round acrylic comes in, you'd have enough to make 96 of those

awesome job, I've been meaning to do something similar because I hate the suction cups and having it mounted above my dash with the coiled smartcord. Are you using a direct smartcord? thats what I'd like to do and somehow install the mute button directly into the dash/console. Can you still see the display from where it's sitting? cuz alot of the time I don't notice the little red alert light on the cig lighter portion of the cord, and I'd hate to miss a legit radar alert and get a ticket. I'd never forgive myself

Yes and yes. You can see the direct-wire cord in the 1st and 2nd pictures. It comes out from under the rectangular wire cover that also covers the "homelink" and auto-dim mirror wiring. You can also see the phone jack plug resting on top of the mirror. As for seeing it, I just have to look up. It's not a stealth installation, but I'm not concerned with that.
