Question What do you all do about smog checks?

Out of curiosity what do you people do about smog checks?

Are the majority of you in states that do not smog?

People swap engines, take out the TGVs, hard wire in a stand alone, put FMICs in, etc - what are you going to do in the 3 years from now if you're in CA (worst case) ? and your smog crap is non-exsistant?

Are you going to junk the car aftwards? How are you going to sell it? Getting ref'd is a total PITA.

How are you getting insurance if you've swapped your motor and the serials no longer match? How much of a pain is it to get that kosher enough so the govie's don't hassle about your car?

This is not a green peace statement, I think CARB blows, but I know just how much crap the gov. can put you through in this kind of stuff.

Do you guys just not care and wait to see the devil when he comes?

I think some people swap the OEM parts back in the mild cases before selling or smogging. I've heard the engine swaps are legal when the engine is newer than the car and could have come with the car?

Regarding insurance, your insurance company doesn't open the hood when taking photos for their records. And if they did, they wouldn't know what to look for. Also, note that you do not need to have photos taken on a new car.

Just a minor correction - vehicles 4 model years old and newer are exempt from the smog check program in CA, unless the car is being sold or registered in CA for the first time.

This is the reason I got the plug 'n play Link and FP turbo and I'm keeping my stock computer, pipes, exhaust manifolds, uppipe, and intake.

If I haven't sold or totalled my rex within the next 4 1/2 years, which would be unusual for me (not selling, that is), I'll put it back together close enough to pass inspection, then depending on how much pain it would be to do that every 2 years from then on, I'll sell the car or put all the goodies back on.

Either that, or I'll sell it to someone out of state.

I live in CA. What I plan to do is ensure that I keep two cats past the turbo. As soon as I get the vishnu Turbo back (has two high flow cats) I will have my car "tested" by a smog place. If it is well within specs, I'll quit worring about it. If it is near or out of tolerance then I'll have to make plans. I expect I can keep the car in smog specs, I may have to run a conservative ECU map, but I plan on being able to pass CA smog...

Good Luck.

This is what I do: Drive to Cerritos, and pay $200.00 to have my car passed. I've had to do it on my mr2 because it had a td06 turbo, I plan on selling my WRX before 4 years is up. They take the sniffer and stick it in the tailpipe of a stock car, and then print my paperwork. It's a performance shop that also happens to own the smog only station next door, but Shhhhhhhhhh That being said, I'm not going to tell where I have it done at.
