Rear diff leaking oil...
OK, so under the car again yesterday and I noticed some oil on my rear sway bar. Very confused, I looked around and it didnt take long to see some oil on the rear diff. its qutie a bit above the filler plug and seems to be coming from one of the bolts. I researched this topic and found that the only stuff I could find were people with their rear diff seizing up or making noise, which mine doesnt do.
My main question, is what kind of oil do you put in the rear diff? I figure I will check it and make sure its full and try to tighten that bolt. Not sure if a seal is broken or not. But If its low Ill probably just empty it out and refill it since your not supposed to mix oils.(and I have no clue what oil is in there now) It doesnt leak while sitting still, but it did have some on the sway bar and a bit on the diff so wanted to fix this problem before it got serious.

On a wrx, you use the same oil that you use in the transmission - 75w90 gear oil. I imagine its the same with an STI.

STi rear diff oil is different. USE THE SUBARU STUFF. It come is a tin can and Conti has it in stock. We have not seen an aftermarket substitute. Play it safe and get the Subaru stuff.

Do you change it regularly? Should change it once after every 10,000 miles. I'll have to get it done before this winter, almost at that point. Especially if you drag race or Auto X a lot. After one season my fluid was pitch black in the rear diff.
Stuff last a long time as long as it's maintained. -Wes |

the vent is on the top of the rear cover. sounds like it's overfilled a bit and you got er warm enough to spew some out. i see it all the time on all types of subarus.

Ok, cool. Ill still pick up some oil tomorrow @ subaru and change it out. Gotta order me a 02 sensor also, it turns out that was in fact the problem with the black one. Put the one from the 04 in and it is as good as new!
