this is what i did this morning when i was playing with the software:

connect the cable to the OBDII port.
connect to your serial port.
(edit: added line) turn the key to the "ON" position
start the software.
(edit: added line) i selected "no" in the "new ECU" popup
select the port that you are using (on my T40 ThinkPad & USB adapter it's port4)
click on the "Live" tab
select the items that you want to view OR under "Capture" you can "Select all analogue data items" and "Select all digital data items"

If you have such a cable/iinterface, why not hook it up, download the free sofware, and tell us whether it works?

I haven't run this software yet (will tonight) but I doubt the Elmscan cable would work. I am running Mike's data logger from openecu.org, and that too worked with either the AP or the Delta Dash cable, but not the Elmscan cable (I tried it). The issue is the voltage of the cable needs to be stepped down for the computer, and the AP and DD cables do this, but the Elmscan cable does not. There are instructions out there on the web (forget the address) on how to assemble the necessary voltage-step-down components, but... I didn't want to wait so I ordered a "replacement" cable from Cobb for $60 give or take.

The cable that I designed for openecu.org is for sale on tactrix.com. It basically is a USB to OBD2 connection in a very compact package. Aside from logging like other adapters, it also has Subaru specific abilities to reflash ECUs. I will be releasing some basic flash reading / writing tools for the 02-05 WRXs within then next couple of weeks. At that point things at openecu.org will start moving more quickly, i hope

What's the difference between the generic version and the WRX version? they are both for the same price. also, what is different about this cable that allows it to write to ECUs?

btw, thanks to calvinC and you for taking the initiative into this.

Not my logger. I just did some work on it to add a few parameters.

BTW- I have a scanning program that will help locate IAM and load on ECUs. Let me know if it would be helpful.

Oops, sorry for the attribution error. Mike helped me get up and running on it, though!

Calvin -- good program. Am looking forward to logging functionality. The program seemed to work on my ECU, although it didn't recognize it. Am sending you the ECU model # picture in a separate email right now.
