Default Crosstrek oil consumption problems?

So my wife and i are considering getting a cross trek but I'm slightly worried about oil consumption problems. i had an impreza sport that had the same problem before my wrx and i know the cross trek has the same engine. Are the cross treks having the same problems. i haven't seen much about it on here. Im just wondering if they worked out the problems yet.

If anyone has any information for me please let me know.

They have as much chance as any new subaru. There are owners on the XV forum, as mentioned.

Take 79 with you to the dealership as a good luck charm. Lightning never strikes twice.

It has the same engine, so the same chance that you will get an oil burner, and probably the same chance as if you buy any new car of having an issue that will need warranty work.

Actually the chance of having an issue requiring warranty work is lower for the Impreza, if you believe Consumer Reports reliability data and predictions.

Me, I estimated less than .02% of the new Impreza's had an oil consumption issue, 79 argued endlessly that is was far, far, higher. This went on for months.

He also thought Subaru was downplaying the issue and would not perform warranty work.

Obviously, there is a process that sucks and that you have to pursue, but most owners with the issue are getting some warranty work to correct it, if you believe what they write.

After all the arguing, 79 traded his oil burner with a flawed engine based upon flawed engineering for an XV (same engine) and has had no issues with oil consumption and is quite happy.

Who knew the Love of Subaru would win in the end...

Okay well that works. I was hoping by now 2 years later they would have figured it out. But I guess we'll just take the chance. She loves the car and from what you say there is a very small chance of consumption problems.
Hopefully we get lucky on this one
Thanks

I'm not sure what they had to figure out, if it was an engineering flaw more cars would burn oil and etc...

So why did some cars burn oil? Production flaw? Made on a friday? Abuse (high revs)?

Nobody knows, most owners are not reporting a problem, 99% of them...

If you google any new car, 1-2 years after it is made, you are going to find that some owners had issues, the engine died, etc...

That's the problem with complicated machines that all manufacturers are affected by, some more than others.

One thing she can control is to follow the proper break-in procedure. That can improve her chances of not creating an oil-consuming car. Do more research, but in general she neither wants to abuse nor over-baby the engine during break-in.

Better to be harder on it than too easy imo.

Perhaps. But it's best to avoid both ends of the spectrum during break-in. By avoiding overly-hard use and also avoiding babying the engine for the first 1k miles, which extreme is worst becomes irrelevant.

X2!! I was "easy" the first 300-400 miles as I was on hwy from dealer ( had like 3-4 miles when I picked it up). Then 500-800 maybe a little harder, full throttle but only to maybe 4500-5000 rpm. After 800-1200 miles or so I ran it up a little over 5000 RPM'S more often but it never saw redline till prob 3000 miles. Fact was, until 3000 miles or so I don't think it could have hit redline. It was so tight and smothered feeling I could outrun it on foot ( some if that was a slow feeling u get from cvt, as it usually always beat everyone away from red lights ). After 5000-6000 miles I've driven the dog out of it ( not abusing but not caring about mpg if you know what I mean ;-) ). Now it runs fine and with the K&N filter it'll pick up RPM'S fairly quickly for a 148hp cvt (which I never thought it would). I have changed oil every 3000 miles less first change at 2000 miles, and use Royal Purple 0W-20 with blk roki filters. I havnt seen an ounce of oil loss from day 1. Maybe if I drove longer between changed I would. But I've never sank a car into a pond either, because I don't drive cars into ponds. They recommend longer intervals these days and more people see oil consumption than before. I know some cars like 79's burned mucho oil he said, but I figured if I change every 3000-4000 miles I'll prob never see it myself. So far I havnt, knock on wood.

In break in you want to do some wot (once completely warm, 20 minutes of driving first) as well as some long low RPM highway cruising and everything in between.

I never used Wide Open Throttle (WOT) during break-in. I used 80% throttle, and never let the RPMs exceed 4k RPM, during the first 1k miles. And I didn't use cruise control during break-in, too.

I avoided low rpm highway loafing like the plague with this one for over 1000 miles. So far the oil stays at the same level.
I never went wot but stayed in the 2000-4500 range mostly.

If only going 3000mi, seems kind of a waste to run expensive oils. But its better to over, than under, maintain it .

I feel less guilty about running it hard if I keep it serviced with quality oils. I wish I could find a " magical" cvt oil that would be better than Subaru oil, just not sure its out there.

Yeah babying the cars doesnt help consumption issues. Thats what I did with my 2012 impreza sport and I had terrible oil consumption problems. But with my 2013 wrx I redlined it regularly during break in and I dont burn a bit of oil or have any other issues. Hehe

One of the BIGGEST reasons for my purchasing the XV was a very attractive offer that I wouldnt have gotten elsewhere. Had I jumped ship for a different brand I wouldnt have ended up with "as much car" for the money.

The consumption issues were 2012. There is an updated oil consumption test for those vehicles.

it took 8 posts to get off-topic. lol

So basically just drive the break-in period like normal? not hard, not soft. lol So is there a break-in period with current technology cars?

I had no idea how to break in a car and used it for commuting from day 1. And if anyone has seen my mpg numbers they know I drive mostly highway, at low rpms. And that's pretty much how I broke it in. No oil consumption here. (In fairness oil light has gone on twice while highway driving [65 mph] but no noticeable oil burning)

Yes, current cars need to be broken in properly.

As for "just drive the break-in period like normal", I guess that depends. My normal driving is too soft for a proper break in, so my first 1k miles was driven harder than normal. I use cruise control a lot. I normally shift around 3k, but shifted closer to 4k during break in.

I didn't even think about breaking in, but I was basically learning to drive stick with the new car, so that did it I guess.
